Persuasive Argument

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of living things and the functions of living things by writing a persuasive essay. The objective of the essay is for the author to persuade his/her audience to agree with their argument. The author will embody or represent a living thing, (other than a human), and write from their point of view. Students will later argue their point of view with classmates from an opposing side.

Requirements: Essay must be a minimum of two full pages, (4 sides), double spaced, and written in ink. Grammar and spelling will be considered in the overall presentation of the paper.

Choose one of the following topics:

(1)Take on the identity of an organelle. Why are you more important to the cell than other organelles? What would happen to the cell without you? Why would life cease to exist without you? Compare and contrast yourself to other organelles, give examples and non-examples. Consider the consequences of eliminating other organelles when you formulate your argument.

(2)Consider the four needs of living things and choose one to personify. Why are you more important to the survival of living things? What would happen to living things without you? Why is it okay for living things to survive without the other three elements, but not you? Consider the consequences of eliminating the other three needs when you formulate your argument.

(3)You are a water molecule. Describe your weeklong experience being diffused in and out of an egg. What happened to you? Why did it happen to you? Describe how you entered and left the egg or cup each night. Include details of your confusing experience being handled by strange looking two legged creatures, being lifted in and out of a cup, mingling with other molecules from water or strange solutions that infiltrated the egg and cup. What were the textures of the solutions and egg like? This essay DOES NOT have to be written in a persuasive format.
