Job Purpose
The Varkey Foundation is an education NGO, with projects currently in operation in Ghana and Uganda. The NGO focuses particularly on teacher training.
We are currently recruiting for a Director of Programmes to join our growing team. The Director of Programmeswill play a vital role in supporting the Varkey Foundation’s programmes and contribute to the future success of the Foundation.
The Director of Programmes will be supporting the CEO in the strategic management of the Foundation.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
The Director of Programmes will have the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Manage the programme delivery team providing leadership, motivation and development
  • Identify and evaluate new countries to deliver teacher training programmes
  • Contribute to the overall running of the Foundation as a senior member of the management team
  • Plan and implement the mobilisation of new country offices
  • Project manage, develop and support teams in new locations
  • Oversee and manage large scale programmes across multiple countries
  • Manage a central support function and regional teams in multiple locations
  • Refine the educational content and approach of programmes to suit the country context on a continual basis
  • Lead teacher advocacy through attending conferences as speaker or participant
  • Manage and co-ordinate the challenge fund
  • Produce pieces of thought leadership aligned with the Foundations goals and objectives
  • Reportingand updating Varkey Foundation Trustees
  • Management of Donor relationships
  • Oversee the Educational Programmes
  • Liaise and support with operations team in Head Office
  • Support and advise trainers
  • Oversee good programme governance and financial budgeting
  • Refine the content approach of the programme to suit the country context on a continual basis
  • Provide line management to regional teams
  • Build and develop high performing teams compromised of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Be involved with the recruitment, selection and development of key team members
Measurable outputs and performance indicators:
  • Programmes show evidence of reflection and continuous improvement reflected in excellence in trainer delivery, content and practice
  • Engagement with partners (MoEs, NGOs, Donors etc.) and new country rollout

Person Specifications
Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience of designing/ writing/ evaluating project proposals
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise a large workload
  • Experience in a similar role is essential
  • Education experience is essential
  • Experience of managing teams is essential
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or experience
  • Strong programme management skills
