Malcolm Spencer Undergraduate Grant Application
This grant is in honor of Malcolm Spencer, a longtime Vermont physical education instructor, who had great admiration for the past student teachers that he mentored.
This award, of up to $300.00, is intended to assist a worthy undergraduate enrolled in an accredited Vermont teacher education program, who would like to enhance their professional development in health, physical education, recreation, or dance. The grant will be used to provide assistance in attending a conference, workshop or symposium, and its use is limited to the cost of the event registration, travel, lodging, and up to $25.00 per day meals stipend. Up to four students per year may be chosen per academic year to receive this grant.*
Guidelines
Applications will be chosen from the following criteria:
- Minimum of junior (third year) status
- Minimum academic performance of a 3.0 overall GPA
- Membership in SHAPE VT and/or SHAPE America
- Advocacy for the profession and community service to one’s Vermont-based institution
- Advocacy for the profession and community service to one’s place of residence
Applicants must complete the following:
- Complete and submit this typed application
- Provide two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a faculty member from their current institution of higher learning.
- Submit a copy of your up-to-date resume
- Submit a statement of objectives that includes the purpose for attending the event, demonstration of financial need, and other rationale for consideration for this award.
- Submit a copy (or a link to) the event or event registration, if available.
- Provide details regarding event expenses (cost of student registration, estimate for travel/mileage at 0.50 cents/mile, meals stipend)
The application should be submitted a minimum of one month prior to the actual event to allow for SHAPE VT Executive Board review.
Students receiving an award will be notified via e-mail.
Original receipts with itemized invoice need to be returned to SHAPE VT within two weeks of the completion of the event in order to be eligible for reimbursement.
