Making Your Own DBQ – Due Date, please look on Agenda

Basic Directions: You will generate your own DBQ. There are seven themes to choose from (see below). We have learned a majority of these themes in class, so think about the larger historical context and connections that can be made; this will help you review as well. You will need to have at least twelve total documents, five groupings and POVs completed on the DBQ analysis sheet (like the one for take home DBQs – page 3), and remember, a document is not only an excerpt; it can be a painting, political cartoon, chart, etc . . . . Remember to keep the documents short. You must okay your theme with me; there will be a sign-up sheet. Additionally, if everyone is focusing on one theme, I will assign themes so that a variety of topics are addressed. YOU MAY NOT SIMPLY COPY ANOTHER DBQ THAT IS PLAGARISM, SEE FURTHER DIRECTIONS!

Parameters:

At least twelve documents – at least one image or chart (can be more, but no more than three)

A strong / complex question – it will have two parts to answer (similar to the AP exam)

Your DBQ will mimic our DBQs from class and use the box below, cut and paste when formatting

Must provide P.O.V. – you must complete the DBQ Analysis Sheet – four POV total

Must provide personal groupings – you must provide at least five sets of different groupings, title and numbers

You will also need a Works Cited page, in proper MLA format, or no credit

You will need a hardcopy and a peer essay – please see further directions on page two

Themes:

  1. Scientific Revolution or Enlightenment (significant historical actors and advances)
  2. ISMS – Industrial Revolution, Economic Systems, Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, etc . . .
  3. Gender or Social Issues (focus on the changing roles) – 1450 to 2002
  4. Unifications or Nationalism
  5. Absolutism or England’s Political Context (17th thru 18th Centuries)
  6. Protestant Reformation or Wars of Religion (you choose the country or context)
  7. Cold War or Modern Europe – discuss this one with me

You may not use Wikipedia. Use the library’s valuable resources / databases, unitedstreaming video, web gallery of art, on-line library of liberty, project Gutenberg, the French Revolution site, other sites on my webpage, I have many, and and - - - you will need to ask the librarians for the Nettrekker username and password, remember the Perry Reader, the Sherman Reader, and your AP prep books, there are many valuable resources when it comes to finding primary documents. You may use a doc from another DBQ on-line, but no more then three, you must cite or again that is PLAGARISM.

To reinforce what you will submit, stapled together in this order

First - - - hard copy of the DBQ, make sure it is formatted properly and make sure your works cited is attached to the hard copy – please note your peer will do their prep right on this copy, no need to print two copies

Second - - - your peer’s essay (they are taking your DBQ), graded / ranked and why you gave them that score, make sure you mark their thesis, groupings, POV, etc . . .

Third - - - DBQ analysis sheet, third page of this packet, make sure you include the question and historical background and you will complete all four POVs and five groupings with title and numbers - - - you will complete this before your peer writes their essay – example of groupings, women docs 1, 6, 7, 9 (five like this)

So to reinforce, hardcopy with works cited, peer’s essay graded / ranked, DBQ analysis sheet, in that order

If you want to make this exercise really valuable, you should time yourselves, fifteen minute prep and thirty-five minutes to write / type the essay

Have fun and remember “I Love History”
