EVERGLADES ECOLOGY PROJECT - Honors

You will create an Everglades “book”, or a multi-media presentation (PowerPoint, video,…), that will contain all the following information. This sheet must be turned in with your project.

The Everglades consist of five main habitats:

  1. Hammock
  2. Mangrove
  3. Pineland
  4. Sawgrass
  5. Slough
  1. Find and print a map of Florida that shows the original (pre-1900s) size of the Everglades.
  2. Find and print a map of Florida that shows today’s size of the Everglades.
  3. Compare the difference in size between the historical Everglades and the current Everglades and explain why the size is different.
  4. Explore water flow in the Everglades (how did water flow 100 years ago? From where to where? What is the water flow now? Why is it different now?)
  5. When was Everglades Park created and by whom?

Endangered animal (note: alligators are not endangered any longer)

  1. Describe the animal and explain how it lives in the Everglades (what does it eat, where does it live, how does it find its mate)
  2. Why is the animal endangered?
  3. What, if anything, has been done, or is being done, to increase the population of this animal?

Assigned animal that lives in the Everglades: ______

  1. Show your animal as a picture or a drawing
  2. Create a food chain that your assigned animal is part of.
  3. How is the animal adapted to life in South Florida? (What features and habits does this animal have that allow it to survive in the Everglades? Think about what it eats and how it rears its offspring)

Assigned typical Everglades plant: ______

  1. Show your plant as a picture or a drawing
  2. Create a food web that your assigned plant is part of.
  3. How is the plant adapted to life in South Florida?

Non-native, invasive animal species

  1. List one animal that is not native to the Florida Everglades (do not choose the python or other large constrictor snake).
  2. Provide a picture or drawing.
  3. Describe the problems this species is causing (environment, other animals, humans?)
  4. How did this animal get here?
  5. What measures are being taken to remove this species from the Everglades?

Non-native, invasive plant species

  1. Provide a picture or drawing.
  2. Describe the problems this species is causing to the environment.
  3. What measures are being taken to remove this species from the Everglades?
