Brief“Job” Descriptions of SIMPLE QUILT-ers

PINNERS (no sewing involved!): You are on your feet all the time, and you set the pace for everyone else. Simple quilts (SQs from here on)will be preassembled, sewn on two sides, and piled under your raised tables. Your job is to take one at a time, smooth it out on the table, pin it in position, trim the remaining edges so that ALL edges match. You will also leave a 12” length longer than the rest in a predetermined position. This will serve as the opening our simple quilts will be “flipped” through. You will then pass your pinned and trimmed SQs on to the STITCHERS. A sense of humor helpful; scissors, pins, and pin cushions provided.

STITCHERS (regular machine or serger used):You complete the sewing on the remaining two sides of the SQ, making sure to leave the opening open!! Regular machines use a straight stitch, sergers serge. This should be much easier now since the first two sides will be done. You must be very careful to catch all three pieces, so we use a generous one inch seam allowance. The challenge is working with a large and bulky item, and “easing in” when dealing with stretchy material.

You may bring your own machine, or use one of ours. If you bring your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order. If you haven’t used it in a while, why not take it to the White/Singer Sewing Center,209 Northampton St, Easton (610-434-8777). Tell them you’re going to use it for SQs, and you’ll get a discount.

You need to bring a pair of scissors (mark them somehow, I tie a ribbon around the handle of mine) and EXTRA BOBBINS that fit your machine. Thread and pin “cushions” will be provided; and don’t forget your smile!

FLIPPERS (NO sewing required!!): Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to reach in the opening of the SQ (between the two pieces destined to be on the outside… it will be marked) and all the way through to the opposite corner, grab it, pull that corner back out through the opening, and then SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE!!! You’ll then have to gently coax the rest of it through, push out the corners, mark the opening, and… Presto! Chango! No one ever sees the “middle” again. Oops! The FIRST thing you need to do is check for pins and remove them before flipping!! Tables and room to shake provided, just bring your sense of humor. This would be a great task for parent/child teams to share!

ZIGGERS (Regular machines ONLY): You will receive a SQ that has been stitched and flipped with the opening closed, and pinned. Your task is to zigzag about an inch inside the edge all the way around the quilt, with extra care, perhaps a second row of stitches, at the opening (we will NOT be hand stitching this later!).

You may bring your own machine, or use one of ours. If you bring your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order. If you haven’t used it in a while, why not take it to the White/Singer Center, Northampton, Easton. Tell them you’re going to use it for SQs, and you’ll get a discount.

You need to bring a pair of scissors (mark them somehow, I tie a ribbon around the handle of mine) and EXTRA BOBBINS that fit your machine. Thread and pin “cushions” will be provided; and please… leave any perfectionism at home!!

KNOTTERS (NO sewing required!): You make the quilt a quilt by tying the three (sometimes 2 or 4) layers together. First, curved needles are thread with colored embroidery thread. With the SQ laid out over a table, the needle is pulled through the SQ and the thread cut at 16 locations (we’ll show you where…. It’s easy!). The threads are then tied in triple knots…. and you’re done! The older children at VBS LOVED tying the knots!! That makes this another great activity for parent/child teams. You’ll need to bring just one thing to share… your smile!!

GOFERS (NO sewing required): The above tasks will be split between the ground level, overflow room level, and fellowship hall level of our church. Your job will be to carry SQs in various stages of development up and down the stairs. Once they are completed, your job will be to arrange on the pews in the Sanctuary and keep us informed of our total. Good health and good shoes/sneakers a must, patience highly recommended.

Feeders (No sewing required!!): Your job is to seek out and serve food donations (Wegmanns??) to keep our workers fed and hydrated. There will be no “official” lunch or dinner breaks, but food should be available in the kitchen for our workers at all times. Clean up before leaving necessary, keeping track of donors necessary, reinventing the wheel not necessary.

Save the date:

Saturday, OCTOBER 25th

is

Make a Difference Day

And once again we will be making

SIMPLE QUILTSat Arndt’s!

ALL HANDS ARE NEEDED!! PARENT/CHILD TEAMS TOO!!

Be on the look out for “Job” Descriptions and for the sign up sheet (4 hour shifts) in the Narthex. You can help NOW (and until October 25th) by…

  1. Soliciting volunteers!! Consider friends, neighbors, co-workers, members of other churches, non-church members, service groups… pray for God’s lead! All will receive a T-shirt and the satisfaction of joining with volunteers across the country for this great day of helping others. Shifts will be four hours long: 8am – noon; noon – 4pm; and 4 – 8pm. “Job” Descriptions available at the church or online at
  2. Soliciting donations!! Besides the usual sheets, bedspreads, mattress pads, curtains, and other material (please…NO CLOTHING!!) we could also use sponsors who could feed us and provide the T-shirts. Any cash donations solicited would go to Project Comfort which covers the costs of shipping our quilts around the world.
  3. Doing prep work! This includes sorting incoming materials, cutting/ripping flat sheets into the correct size, removing the elastic and cutting the seams in fitted sheets, piecing together tops, and sewing two sides of each SQ. This can be done at home at your convenience, OR you can join Marj any Thursday morning at the church from 9 am – noon. All are welcome!!
  4. Donating items for sale at our Peddler’s Day booth. Any monies raised will defray operating and shipping costs. Our main goal, though, is advertising our project.
  5. Being patient with the piles of materials in the overflow room. I’ll do my best to keep it neat, organized, and hidden. Remember….. it’s all for a good cause! (And if we win the $10,000 it will CERTAINLY be worth it!)
  6. Helping on Saturday, September 13th, 10am – 2pm. We will be working together to PREP our simple quilts for October 25th (see #3).
