The Supervisor of Special Education reports to the Director of Special Education and is responsible for the instructional leadership and day-to-day supervision of the special education programs including self-contained programs throughout the district. The Supervisor of Special Education works collaboratively with building teams and parents to ensure an appropriate and high quality special education program for eligible students.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Participate in the development and promotion of the special education philosophy of service and delivery.
2.Support teacher coordination of staffing, scheduling of IEPs and related meetings.
3.Participate in METS, IEPs and staffing as needed.
4.Responsible for implementing the mission and vision of the special education department under the leadership of the Director of Special Education.
5.Serve as the primary evaluator for select special education teachers and itinerant staff.
6.Assist in the selection of new teachers, paraprofessionals and itinerant staff.
7.Assist in the assignment of teaching, paraprofessional and itinerant staff.
8.Participate in the creation and supervision of professional practice standards in the department.
9.Foster and develop positive relationships and communicate with parents, staff, and families;
10.Keep informed of legal requirements governing special education and assure that staff and programs are in total compliance with the law;
11.Develop and monitor procedures for selection of children requiring special education support;
12.Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining and filing all reports, records and other documents legally required or administratively useful;
13.Participate in the review, selection and inventory of instructional needs;
14.Identify professional development needs of staff;
15.Develop and implement professional development opportunities for both professional and non-professional staff;
16.Serve as a resource for parents regarding special education;
17.Perform the other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education.
The individual selected for this assignment will be the one who offers the best combination of qualities in accordance with the following standards and requirements:
1.Michigan Department of Education approval or temporary approval for Supervisor of Special Education preferred and Temporary Approval as a Director/Supervisor of Special Education acceptable;
2.Master's degree or higher with specific emphasis in special education administration;
3.Full approval in at least one area of special education preferred;
4.A minimum of three years of successful teaching in special education or certification as a school psychologist or school social worker with three years of successful professional experience;
5.Demonstrated ability in the organization and supervision of special education programs;
6.Knowledge of the techniques of modification and accommodation as they relate to the general education curriculum; and
7.Evidence of an ability to take a leadership role in special education through active participation in professional organizations and special education interest groups.
8.Evidence of the candidate's ability to provide quality leadership must be demonstrable through:
•Excellent communication skills;
•A record of leadership in effecting reform and meaningful change in instructional practice;
•A conceptual understanding of human growth and development, learning theories and teaching methodologies, special education service delivery models, state and federal rules related to special education;
•Assumption of responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and approved techniques; and attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions;
•Skill in fostering the continued growth of staff members;
•A record of productive, positive interpersonal relationships;
•Ability to mediate conflict;
•A demonstrated knowledge and commitment regarding current societal and educational issues such as diversity, the Integrated Model of Special Education, collaborative problem-solving etc.; and
•A working knowledge of current best practice across disciplines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Ability to stand and walk over 60% of the work day in order to walk between classrooms to observe instruction and meetings and rotate throughout the school complex on a regular basis.
•Ability to sit up to 40% of the day in meetings, and to sit/stand several times in short periods of time while moving between classroom and sitting for short intervals of instructional observation.
•Ability to walk up and down stairs throughout the day, and walk up/down bleachers or other stepped surfaces while supervising students or extracurricular events.
•Must be able to work up to 12 hours in a day, which include the full school day and then during after school extra-curricular activities where administrative supervision and involvement is required.
SALARY RANGE AND FRINGE BENEFITS:
An attractive and competitive salary and benefits package is available. Salary range for the 2012-2013 school year is $84,446 to $107,868 annually. A comprehensive fringe benefits package, insurances, vacation, and sick leave is included. The work year is 11 months, 240 days.
