MAINTENANCE OF WALKWAYS STANDARD
ABC COMPANY
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to recognize, assess and control hazards on walkways outside and in the mill. Any defects can be identified and reported to the immediate supervisor where appropriate action will be taken.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Worker
- Complete visual inspection of work area on a daily basis and relay any deviation from standard to your supervisor.
- Cleanup as necessary prior to and after of regular duties in your work area. In the winter make sure that allwalkways are shovelled and ice salt or sand is spread around where needed.
Supervisor
- Complete reports on Housekeeping as required and note any problems with walkways on the report.
- Ensure that walkway areas that do not meet safety standards are noted on checklist and maintenance is notified if any repairs are needed.
- The supervisor will ensure that copies of the checklist are made available to the H&S Committee and/or H&S Representative.
- The supervisor will maintain records of all inspections.
Maintenance
- Perform repairs if necessary to keep walkways within safety standards.
- Include a visual inspection to ensure walkways are maintained.
H&S Committee and/or H&S Representative
- Every month conduct an inspection of the walkways. This will be done with the monthly safety inspections.
- The H&S Committee and/or H&S Representative will use the checklist for inspection checks of the facility. The checklist will be reviewed for adequacy as part of all accident investigations.
- The assigned person(s) will complete the forms promptly noting any deviations in regard to walkways. Any deviation on walkways must result in the area being cleaned up and/or repaired.
In particular, concerns to look for during inspections and repairs are:
- Spills
- Obstacles on walkways
- Walkways free from clutter
- Proper lighting available
- All stairs are clear
- Handrails are in good shape
- Parking lots are free from holes, garbage
- Snow, ice on walkways
- Slippery surfaces
- Floors need sweeping
- Scale area clean
TRAINING
The Employer will ensure that all supervisors and workers receive appropriate training in regard to maintenance of walkways and what to look for.
DOCUMENTATION
All training will be effectively documented and records of all inspections maintained.
COMMUNICATION
All employees will be made aware of this policy. This will be accomplished through the hiring process, handbooks, notices and orientation training
EVALUATION
The H&S Committee and/or H&S Representative and management will annually and following any accident / incident, evaluate the effectiveness and compliance with this policy.
