Top ten nationally for research ‘power’ and ‘quality’

King’s has risen to 6th position* nationally in the ‘power’ ranking – up from 11th in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. ‘Power’ takes into account both the quality and the quantity of research activity. King’s has also risen to 7th position* for quality – up from 22nd in 2008. 84 per cent of our research has been deemed 3* and 4* (up from 61 per cent in RAE 2008), meaning that it is regarded as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.The proportion of the university’s overall submission classified as 4* has risen from 19 per cent in 2008 to 39 per cent in REF 2014. King’s submitted 1,369 staff compared with 1,172 in RAE 2008, which represents an increase of 14 percent. 80 per cent of eligible staff were submitted to REF 2014 compared with 79 per cent last time.

Higher education sector comparisons

In terms of comparison across the sector, King’s has had some outstanding successes notably:

•Law is 1st in the country for quality of research and 7th for power (up from 19th and 14th respectively);

•Education is 2nd for quality and 4th for power;

•Clinical Medicine is 3rd for quality;

•General Engineering (Imaging Sciences) is 5th for quality and submitted twice the number of staff compared with 2008;

•Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience is 2nd in the country for power and achieved 100 percent 4* ranking for research ‘environment’;

•Politics and International Studies is 1st for power*;

•History is 5th for quality and 7th for power;

•Philosophy is 3rd for quality and 3rd for power;

•Communication, Cultural and Media Studies (Culture, Media and Creative Industries and Digital Humanities) are 1st for power and 8th for quality and scored 100% at 4* for research ‘environment’.

Based on proportions of research at 3* and 4*, 19 of our 27 submissions rank in the top quartile nationally. Outstanding performances include: General Engineering (Imaging Sciences) with a total of 99 per cent, putting us in first position nationally in terms of proportion of submissions ranked at 4*/3*; Clinical Medicine with 93 percent, alsoin first position nationally in terms of proportion of submissions ranked at 4*/3*; and the three submissions to Subjects Allied to Medicine (Dentistry; Nursing & Midwifery and Palliative Care; and Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences and Women’s Health), which also achieved scores in the 90s.

Research outputs

For research outputs, 15 of 27 Units of Assessment have achieved an upper quartile ranking based on 3* and 4* classifications. Particularly strong performances have been seen for General Engineering (Imaging Sciences), Clinical Medicine, Dentistry and Mathematics.

Impact

The ‘impact’ of research was introduced as a new metric in the REF and represents 20 percent of the overall submission. Eighteen of King’s 27 submissions have upper quartile status based on 3* and 4* quality ratings. In particular the areas of Education; Culture, Media and Creative Industries/Digital Humanities; Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care; Public Health; General Engineering and Law scored highly for impact.Furthermore, measured against other multi-disciplinary universities, rather than specialist higher education institutions, King’s is ranked 4th in the country for research impact.

Our fundraising campaign World questions|King’s answers was launched publicly in 2010 with a goal to raise £500 million by 2015 and to answer urgent global questions focusing on cancer, children’s health, neuroscience, mental health, understanding shifts in global power and supporting the next generation of global leaders.

In June 2014 we announced that we had reached our target 18 months early and committed to raise another £100 million by the end of the campaign. The Directorate

The Directorate of Estates and Facilities is responsible for efficient and effective acquisition, disposal, management and operation of the College’s Infrastructure assets and the environment within which the College’s Students, Staff, and Researchers operate.

The Department

The Department has 3 main functions:

Asset Management – Determination and execution of Colleges Infrastructure and services strategy, ensuring that services provide value for money, whilst safeguarding the Colleges staff, students, and researchers, and ensuring that assets and facilities availability performance meets the demanding needs of the Colleges core business. Asset Management is also responsible for identifying and implementing strategies for managing the Colleges use of energy and water, and reducing the College’s impact on the environment

Development & Capital Projects – Managing new build and major refurbishment projects within the existing estate, in addition to the management and execution of acquisitions and disposals in line with the College’s long term space strategy.

Facilities Services – Provide support services, commensurate with a world leading institution, to the Colleges students, staff and researchers. Including; cleaning, security, porterage, postal services, catering, hospitality, and event planning.

The Post

The Maintenance Manager – Central Engineering & Infrastructure,will be responsible for the specific hard services delivery across the KCL Estate of the “pan estate” shift teams, in conjunction with the Campus specific maintenance teams. This role reports to the Head of Asset Maintenance. The Central Engineering Team will compromise of a mix of technicians and assistants. It will be responsible for reactive works generated by the CAFM system, routine PPM's and the provision of operational support to running of the campus e.g. permits. It is the responsibility of the Maintenance Manager - Central Engineering Team, to ensure that the highest quality of service delivery is maintained and to ensure that staff and students see a one team approach to the delivery of estates and facilities. This will be measured by reference to the CAFM system, structured review of compliments and complaints, and routine feedback from the Campus Operations Managers. The Maintenance Manager – Central Engineering & Infrastructure, role with be professionally, technically & functionally managed by the Head of Asset Maintenance, but may from time to time take direction from the Campus Operations Teams where the service delivery is paramount.

This role will require travel across the whole of the College estate.

Role purpose

The effective delivery of Hard Services and Fabric Maintenance across designated buildings located within the KCL Estate, to specifically include the following:-
  • The provision of a customer orientated Hard FM service.
  • Maintaining Risk Management systems.
  • Development of service innovations across their Campus and the Estate.
  • The responsibility for all Shift DEL involved in the delivery of the mechanical, electrical, BMS and building fabric services within the designated locations in terms of safety and quality.
  • To ensure that the service delivery team is trained and competent for the roles for which they are responsible and to manage an upskilling programme for all staff. .
  • Management of specific Statutory compliance requirements applicable to Hard Services maintenance in terms of both execution and record keeping.
  • Delivery of a value-for-money service to the College.
  • Leadership with regards to energy reduction, and the implementation of KCL’s Environmental policy.
  • Strategic support to the Head of Asset Maintenance to deliver the College quality, innovation, energy/carbon and value for money agenda across the area of responsibility.

Role Profile

Central responsibilities
  • Ensure maximum operational usage of all hard facilities for the benefit of the College.
  • Be accountable for the provision, operation and reactive maintenance of all electrical and mechanical services, plant and equipment and building fabric assigned to the Central Engineering Team.
  • Ensure that all repairs are carried out within the defined SLA’s and value for money is obtained.
  • Ensure that all Estates Department procedures and installations meet all statutory obligations and requirements.
  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant H&S legislation and documents
  • Ensure Health & Safety Compliance by the team.
  • Uphold the integrity pf the Estates & Facilities Department at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with Statutory Instruments (SI) and Approved Codes of Practice.
  • Direct Management of Team Leader(s) and Senior Management support to Maintenance teams.
Management duties
  • Ensure that all maintenance operations are undertaken in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Improve performance and the reporting of engineering/maintenance activity to management and the team.
  • Ensure all members of the team are trained appropriately and competent to carry out their duties at all ties, and are fully instructed in the operation of new installations and systems.
  • Upskill the team to ensure more works are completed in house.
  • Ensure value for money is obtained on all expenditure.
  • Promote sustainable management techniques through the development and implementation of campus wide environmental and sustainability policies and management systems.
  • Collaborate with the Asset Improvement team to deliver infrastructure projects and manage O&M information.
  • Assist the local Maintenance Manger to maintain a building by building Risk Register and include in routine reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Campus specific Maintenance Managers to ensure critical and non-critical engineering & infrastructure is maintained to an appropriate standard.
  • Provide a monthly report (format to be agreed) to the Head of Asset Maintenance.
  • Support the Head of Asset Improvement to develop and implement a Business Continuity and Risk Mitigation plan.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Operations Teams to ensure a one team approach and attain high standards of customer service.
  • Undertake periodic Quality surveys.
Day to day activities
  • Manage staff performance to meet the highest standard of technical and customer service delivery.
  • To carry out regular inspections of premises, report defects and arrange timely rectification.
  • Drive the use of the department’s CAFM system to improve the operational management of the areas under control and capture activity and operational management information. Share this information across the teams as necessary.
  • Carry out internal audits as defined by the Head of Asset Maintenance in support of the E&F Compliance team.
  • Support the Campus Operations Managers, and attend meetings as necessary.
  • Attend meetings of the Asset Maintenance Management team.
  • Attend meetings of the Hard Services branch of the Campus Operations team to discuss, plan and programme works.
  • Ensure that O&M’s are current and available to all management, DEL staff and contractors.
  • Assist in the appointment and training of electrical, mechanical, building trade staff and maintenance assistants.
  • Ensure good teamwork and high morale is maintained.
  • Deputise for the Head of Asset maintenance when required
  • Participate in the team on-call rota.
  • Ensure all staff have a development plan linked to SMART objectives.
  • Carry out monthly 121’s / PDR reviews and objective setting
