Exploratory Latin/German Syllabus

Overview:- This course is a nine week course designed for middle school students and is comprised of 4.5 weeks of Exploratory Latin and 4.5 weeks of Exploratory German. The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with both the Latin and German languages and to explore the Greco-Roman and German cultures. Students will understand their own culture and the English language better as they study different aspects of both Latin and German.
There is no student textbook for this course as we will be using teacher-created materials to educate and enrich the students’ understanding of course topics.
Curriculum: Here is a list of core topics that will be taught in either Latin or German or both languages.
A. Greetings, Farewells and Classroom Expressions (hello, stand, sit etc)
B. Numbers
C. Geography and Language Development
D. Mythology/Fairy Tales
E. Family Members
F. English Derivatives and Cognates
Nota bene: There will be one food day during this 9 week course which will feature both Roman and German foods.
Grading/Requirements:
The student will need the following for class every day:
1. Notebook/folder
2. Pencil/pen
3. There will be quizzes, tests and small projects
4. Homework-if homework is assigned—it will be collected and graded based on accuracy and the student will lose points for not having it completed on time—when they enter the class. Three missed homeworks = academic detention (to access homework visit LD website under Foreign Languages)
Extra Credit Opportunities: If a student desires to complete extra credit they may earn it the following ways:
1. Students can earn extra credit by reading articles about Ancient Rome, or current events articles pertaining to Germany, seeing movies/documentaries about Rome or Germany and then writing a 1-2 paragraph summary and critique of the article or movie.
2. Read either the “Calliope” or “German Life”Magazines that are in the classroom. They can select and article from either and write about what they have read.
3. Visit a German event or museum that illustrates either Roman or German culture and report on what was learned.
4. Students may not do more than 2 extra credits per marking period.
***We plan to watch the movie “Clash of the Titans”. This movie is Pg-13 due to some violence and there is one swear word. Please indicate whether or not your child has permission to watch this movie. If they do not, an alternate assignment will be given.
