Maghull Hornby Festival 2013 Activity Badge

Maghull Hornby Festival 2013 Activity Badge

This festival badge was the idea of St Andrews Rainbow Leaders, who have been inspired by the recent Frank Hornby Festival in May to mark the 150th Birthday of the man himself.

Frank Hornby was an English inventor, businessman and politician. He was a visionary in toy development and manufacture, and although he had no formal engineering training, he was responsible for the invention and production of three of the most popular lines of toys – Meccano, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys. He lived some of his life in Maghull and indeed was laid to rest in St Andrews Church graveyard.

The challenge is very easy to complete and has been structured into 3 sections - Play-it, Make-it and See-it. Within each section, you'll find activities appropriate to your Uniformed Section, which can be identified by the symbols at the top of each suggested activity i.e. Beavers/Rainbows, Brownies/Cubs.

All you need to do is select the Hornby Brand within each section that appeals to you most then complete at least one activity. It can be completed over 3 or more weekly meetings or as a one off activity event.

All templates, song sheets and game instructions are enclosed in this pack to support your preparation, together with a badge ordering form . Directions and the map for the heritage trail can be found on the Maghull Hornby Festival website www.maghullhornbyfestival.wordpress.com .

The cost of the Badge is £1 (plus postage cost). Any profit made will be used by St Andrews Rainbows to fund the cost of future Rainbow outings, rent and sleepovers.

Enjoy the Challenge, embrace Frank Hornby and if you have any queries, please feel free to contact Lisa Coleman at

Section 1 – Station/Garage Corners Game

This is a variation on the game Colour Corners and is an elimination game.

1.  Name each corner of the room after either a station/garage part i.e.

a.  Stations – Liverpool, Kings Cross, Leeds, Edinburgh

b.  Garage Sections – Fuel, Repairs, Sales, Servicing

2.  Instruct the children that whilst the music is playing, they must move around like a train/car but when it stops they are to choose a corner which is the station/part of the garage they wish to visit.

3.  The leader of the game then randomly shouts out a named corner and all children in that station/garage section are out.

4.  Continue until only one child remains and is declared the winner.

Section 1 – Lyrics for London’s Bridge

London Bridge is falling down,
Falling down, falling down,
London Bridge is falling down,
My fair Lady.
Build it up with wood and clay,
Wood and clay, wood and clay,
Build it up with wood and clay,
My fair Lady.
Wood and clay will wash away,
Wash away, wash away,
Wood and clay will wash away,
My fair Lady.
Build it up with bricks and mortar,
Bricks and mortar, bricks and mortar,
Build it up with bricks and mortar,
My fair Lady.
Bricks and mortar will not stay,
Will not stay, will not stay,
Bricks and mortar will not stay,
My fair Lady.
Build it up with iron and steel,
Iron and steel, iron and steel,
Build it up with iron and steel,
My fair Lady.
Iron and steel will bend and bow,
Bend and bow, bend and bow,
Iron and steel will bend and bow,
My fair Lady.
Build it up with silver and gold,
Silver and gold, silver and gold,
Build it up with silver and gold,
My fair Lady.
Silver and gold will be stolen away,
Stolen away, stolen away,
Silver and gold will be stolen away,
My fair Lady.
Set a man to watch all night,
Watch all night, watch all night,
Set a man to watch all night,
My fair Lady.
Suppose the man should fall asleep,
Fall asleep, fall asleep,
Suppose the man should fall asleep?
My fair Lady.
Give him a pipe to smoke all night,
Smoke all night, smoke all night,
Give him a pipe to smoke all night,
My fair Lady.

Section 1 – Play It – Runaway Train Lyrics

The runaway train came down the track and she blew,
The runaway train came down the track and she blew,
The runaway train came down the track, her whistle wide and her throttle back,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
The engineer said the train must halt and she blew,
The engineer said the train must halt and she blew,
The engineer said the train must halt -- he said it was all the fireman's fault,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
The fireman said he rang the bell and she blew,
The fireman said he rang the bell and she blew,
The fireman said he rang the bell -- the engineer said "You did like h***!"
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
The porter got an awful fright and she blew,
The porter got an awful fright and she blew,
The porter got an awful fright -- he got so scared he near turned white,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
A donkey was standing in the way and she blew,
A donkey was standing in the way and she blew,
A donkey was standing in the way and all they found was just his bray,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
The conductor said there'd be a wreck and she blew,
The conductor said there'd be a wreck and she blew,
The conductor said there'd be a wreck and he felt the chills run up his neck,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
The runaway train went over the hill and she blew,
The runaway train went over the hill and she blew,
The runaway train went over the hill and the last we heard she was going still,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew.
