Lesson Title and Duration / Growth & Development Of Infants ( 2-3 45 min classes)
Learner Outcomes /
Objectives (Write on the board so students and visitors are aware of student learning outcome) / Students will describe and identify the difference between growth and development, describe at least 5 reflexes and the 4 areas of growth children go through.
Standards (the California State Standards addressed in this lesson)
California State Standards for Career Technical Education http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ct/sf/documents/ctestandards.pdf / ECDFS.FS.-A10.7 Explain the importance of studying child growth and development from infancy ...Standard detail3.2 Identify the developmental areas, stages, and principles of child growth. (ECDFS – A10.7.2) Standard detail3.4 List factors that contribute to the optimal development of children. (ECDFS – A10.7.4)
Materials
Needed / Infant Activity, Growth & Dev. PPT, Growth and Development study guide, Growth and Development teacher info, Infant reflexes skit MOV, Primary reflexes MOV, pictures of students any age0- 2 years old and present.
Differentiated Learning Needs
Anticipatory Set – activities that help focus students on the lesson of the day (the “hook”) / Have the students use the baby photos and present photos to make lists of physical traits they notice as a baby and list of traits today. (I do this on colored paper and post them when they are done. It also helps lead into genetics and heredity.)
Teaching the Lesson
Ø  Modeling – how will you demonstrate the skill or competency?
Ø  Instructional Strategies – how will you deliver the lesson?
Ø  Check for Understanding – how will you ensure the skill or competency is understood by the students? / I post photos of myself from birth to most recent, on the white board.
Use the Infant growth and dev. PPT along with students using the study guide. Show the reflexes clips to help describe the definitions.
Monitor the completion of the study guide.
Differentiate Learning Needs / Have an already prepared study guide with some of the information already filled in, or provide the individual students with a hard copy of the notes you are using for the class lecture.
Guided Practice /
Monitoring – an activity directly supervised by the instructor that allows students to demonstrate grasp of new learning. Instructor moves around the room determining the level of mastery and providing individual remediation as needed. / Use the baby and present photo page to now make a list of changes in their photo that were GROWTH changes and which would be DEVLOPEMENT changes.
Differentiated
Learning Needs / Use a T-Chart to capture the notes from above.
Closure – Statements or actions made by the instructor that help students make sense out of what has just been taught, to help form a coherent picture, to eliminate confusion and frustration, and to reinforce major points to be learned. / Children go through the same growth and developmental changes, not necessarily at the same time, but usually the same order. All physical changes can greatly be influenced by caregiver interactions and experiences.
Independent
Practice – a question or problem for students to ponder on their own or in small groups or pairs. The aim is to reinforce and extend the learning beyond the lesson and ideally into real world settings. This may be a homework assignment. / Dividing the 12 mos of infancy into six - 2 month categories, each table group will prepare some pictures with labels to create a large classroom chart to display.
Provide a large sheet of butcher paper, baby/children magazine pictures, colored pencils, crayons, markers andglue sticks for students to create a visual representation of the milestones and physical characteristics fitting for their selected 2 months of infancy.
Check for understanding: Circulate while students are finding pictures to discuss the physical characteristics that indicate the child is the age their group is portraying. After gluing on the pictures, students need to label some of the major milestones for that age. Let them know to save room on the mural to add more milestones/developmental traits for Intellectual and Social-Emotional development that will be covered in future lessons.
Differentiated Learning Needs
Summarize,
Evaluate & Reflect – after teaching the lesson, ask students to reflect on their learning. Instructors can also reflect on the lesson, its success, and how it can be improved. / Summarize the 4 areas of development and answer the question: Do we ever stop developing and why?
