Around the Courts …..

U14 Boys Hawks

The 14 Hawks had a sluggish start to the game however won comfortably 34-16. The boys started slowly and struggled offensively in the first half, taking a slim lead at halftime, 11-8. They begun the second half with more intensity and better ball movement which lead to easy baskets, with Eden Erny (10) having his best game of the season. Brent Zeh (7) was once again strong on the boards which allowed him to get to the free throw line as well as some cheap put back layups. Dylan Belcher (4) laid on some sweet passes and drove strong to the ring for a few nice baskets as well. The Hawks remain undefeated for the season.

U18 Boys Celtics

An undermanned U18 Boys Celtics fought valiantly, however went down 46-35. The Celtics were missing key players, with only 4 regulars available and under 16 Lakers player, Deron Losky, filling in to make it 5. The boys started strongly, led by Marc Abrams (23 points), however fatigue and a lack of depth proved costly as they were outgunned by their opposition. To make matters worse, Nadav Losky went down with a bad wrist injury, forcing the Celtics to play the final 15 minutes with only 4 players. Adam Hakim (8 points) was strong from the point guard position and Sam Gold (2) tried his best to keep the scores close, however a gutsy Celtics team were eventually overcome. Deron Losky (2) held his own considering the age difference he was faced with. Coach Matt Bineth was disappointed with the result, however extremely pleased with the effort from the boys.

U12 Boys Devils

U12 Boys Devils played Sonicboom and won a great game.

They fought hard to the end, even though Newtown only had 4 players.

Won 37-25.

Senior Men Warriors

Played UNSW Gold and won 29-24 (1st this year!!). Keyan Kramer, Josh Marks & David Bloch led the scoring, with Eli Small & Kyle Weltman strong on defence & on the rebounds, & Ronny Schnapp hitting 2 free-throws to seal the game.

Senior Men Heat

Played the Hurricanes and lost 22-31. Gid Huberman scored 10 points, whilst Keyan Kramer & Joel Drexler tried hard throughout.

Senior Mens Benny’s Ball

Played Pappas Red.

Lost 16-37, after being tied at 12-12 at half-time.

U14 Girls Cheetahs

The Maccabi U14 Cheetahs played the Bronte Sparks in a very intense encounter.

In the first half Brianna Gadley defended well, getting infront of her players and pressuring her opponents to make crucial turnovers. Danielle Tischmann, the tallest player on the team grabbed rebounds confidently under the ring whilst Martine Agranat guided the team in the point guard position. The Sparks did put pressure on the shooters which proved costly going into half time.

After Coach America laid down the law at half time about their defensive efforts Claudia Kaplan, Jessica Shagrin, and game top scorer Amy Altman started to sink their baskets and were fouled several times. Amy Collins drove to the basket at any opportunity, created space and dribbled through the gaps to sink 11 points unfortunately the Cheetahs lost the game 27-21. A top effort although they lost.

U12 Girls Flames

The Maccabi U12 Flames played Bronte Bouncers, in what was their 3rd ever game together. After a wonderful start to the game, they took the lead with 10 minutes into the game.

Excellent baskets from Mia Nahum, Shai Sztern and Mia Folli. Unfortunately they couldn't hold out the stronger players and went down 36-12.

U12 Girls Gems

The U12 Girls Gems lost to CYS 24-2.

New Maccabi Girls team the Gems, took on CYS after a hard fight.

The only basket came from Elise Palic. The team are improving each week.

U16 Girls Devils

Took on Newtown Fire in this week’s game and was a evenly matched affair with some excellent baskets from Maytal Saltoon 6 pts, Rachel Kaplan 4 pts and Lily Singh 4 pts.

Newtown proved to strong during the second half to win the game 29 - 16

U18 Girls Spirit

The Spirit played a hard fought match against CYS and took the early lead with a couple of fast breaks to open the scoring. The match went basket for basket until mid way through the 2nd half when CYS”s representative playing put on a pin point shooting display to take a 30 point lead to finish 52 -22.U12 Boys Kings and Cavaliers

The U12 Boys Kings played the Maccabi Cavaliers.

The 2 Maccabi teams played off against each other however the more experienced Cavalier's proved too strong for the Kings. The Kings lone scorer was Adam Ross. For the Cavaliers Ben Silbermann was extremely diligent with his shooting skills top scoring with 18 points.

Final score 49-2.

Premier League

The Maccabi Premier League team played their 1st match of Competition 2 against Arncliffe Scots in a very much a family affair especially with the Rosen brothers (Warren and Brad) going head to head. Not only were there brothers in the opposing teams but Sam Hyman was also up against his Uncle Warren. The Maccabi team had an All Star line up with the boys who are all juniors coming through the ranks which included Josh Cohen, Matt Bineth, Simon Platt, newcomers Rob Hart and Richie Cohen along with ex NBL star Bruce Bolden.

The first half consisted of fast breaks, 3 pointers from 4 of the 7 players, mainly through Simon Platt and Captain Brad Rosen. Maccabi played an upbeat man to man defence which pressured Arncliffe, which made them turn over the ball in crucial moments of the game. The pace increased which meant Bruce Bolden was able to sink his trade mark shot from the base line in more than one occasion. The half time score was 34-25.

Continuing into the 2nd half, Maccabi changed their tactics and switched to a zone defence which proved to be successful. Josh Cohen took a charging foul, which gave the Lakers confidence. Sam Hyman came alive with 16 points, mostly jump shots which included an easy dunk. Newcomers Rob Hart and Richie Cohen cemented their place in the top team with aggressive rebounding and assists which gave their team a significant win and a final score of 62-51.

Div 1 Senior Mens

The Maccabi Div 1 teams came together last night for the local derby at Alexandria Basketball Stadium. In a leaking stadium, both teams were hungry for a win. Coaches Mal and Daniel were enthusiastic about the game despite the horrible weather and conditions.

In the first half saw both teams aggressive on their drives to the basket, and also from outside the 3 point line. The Magic team had Jono Symonds and Larry Wagenheim with hot hands whilst from the Kings, Shaun Greenblo and Levi Stevenson also traded some crucial shots. The defensive pressure was visible and the youngsters from the Kings team were starting to lift to give their team a half time lead of 29-20.

In the 2nd half the water the Ehrenfeld brothers (Josh and Zach) combined well together to pressure the Magic side who were clearly frustrated with their lack of falling shots. Larry Wagenheim hit the deck hard after rebounding strongly in the key and Brad Nissen shot some well inside but it was the Kings team who had the upper hand. Elan Nussinov provided some last minute baskets to secure the win 59-41.
