USD 405 MISSION STATEMENT

USD 405 will be accountable for providing a balanced quality education in a positive environmentwhere each student will develop into a self reliant, life-long learner, with the ability to meet society’schallenges.

LMS credits for Promotion

LyonsMiddle School students need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for promotionat the end of their 8th grade year. The principal has final determination of credit for students transferring credit from accredited or equivalent sources. Students entering LMS without enough class time opportunities or previous credit to meet the below requirements can be granted a waiver by the principal for up to the amount of credits in brackets next to each subject.

English 3 Credits Fine Arts 1.0 Credits {.5}

Math 3 Credits Technology .75 Credits {.25}

Science 3 Credits Physical Education 1.5 Credits

Social Studies 3 Credits Electives 1.5 Credits

(Health) .5 Credit {.5}

Students failing a required class will be able to make that class up in the following ways: DirectedStudy Class, In-Progress Morning Study Session, Summer School, or repeating the individual class or grade.

USD 405-Lyons Student Academic Expectations

The academic threshold for all USD 405-Lyons students is a cumulative grade of seventy percent(70%) or more in all classes. Students who perform below the threshold will be able to attend a one-hour,outside of the school day, study sessions (IP Study Hall) until they have attained a seventy percent (70%) cumulative grade inall classes.

Students attending the one-hour, outside of the school day, study sessions must comeprepared and work toward raising their grade to the seventy percent (70%) level.

Student(s) will be ineligible to participate in or attend all schoolactivities (dances, AR parties, field trips, League activities; music and sports) if they do not attend the IP study hall.

Activity Eligibility

Students who are not meeting the academic threshold of seventy percent (70%) will remain eligibleto participate in all activities as long as they attend the one-hour, outside of the school day, studysessions.

Students are required to meet Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA)guidelines in regard to academic eligibility. Currently KSHSSA requires students to pass five (5) subjects of equal weight during his or her last semester of attendance. Summer school does not make a student eligible.

Grading Procedures

All teachers at the Middle School level will follow the following grading scale.

A = 100-90

B = 89-80

C = 79-70

IP/F = 69 – 40

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty is not acceptable. Cheating, defined as copying another student’s work and claiming it as your own and plagiarism, defined as the use of another person’s original ideas or writing without giving credit to the true author, are both prohibited policies. Materials taken from electronic sources are covered by this policy. A student who engages in any form of academic dishonesty will be subject to the loss of credit for the work in question, as well as other disciplinary measures up to and including suspension or expulsion.

Honor Roll

Student’s grades will be computed each nine-week period for selection to the High Honor, Honor, orHonorable Mention. The requirements that students must achieve for each level of the honor roll are; HighHonor all A’s, Honor all A’s and B’s. An “in progress” grade will negate a student’s eligibility for the honorroll.

Before/After School Study Assistance

Students may request after school study assistance from instructors or in the afternoon IP Study Hall. Students who do not keep classwork or homework assignments up-to-date will be offered to attend before school In-Progress study session thatprovides the student an opportunity to make up assignment(s) due to his/her misbehavior or absences.

Interpretation of Student Attendance Policy

Purpose

Attendance is an important part of a student’s school record. School attendance is the responsibilityof the student and the parent/guardians. Developing proper attendance habits is one of the greatest services aschool can offer tomorrow’s working world. Regular attendance leads to proper functioning of the middleschool. If students are to be absent, their parents/guardians are expected to make arrangement with theschool, which are in compliance with this policy. Students may not miss three consecutive days of schoolwithout a medical or court note. Students may not miss more than five unexcused days of school in asemester and not more than seven unexcused days in a school year all together per KansasState law. (This is now tracked by the Kansas State Department of Education via the computers.)

Absences

Absences are those times which students are not present in class during a regularly scheduledmeeting of that class. Absences will be classified as either excused or unexcused. Students who arrive toclass 15 or more minutes late will be counted absent.

Excused Absences

These are absences that are caused by a valid excuse. A parental/guardian call will, in most cases,verify this type of absence. Students will present an admit slip to the teacher before returning to class after anabsence. A telephone call by the parent/guardian will be needed before 9:00 a.m. in the office, the day of theabsence or a note the next day the student is present at school from the parent/guardian for the absent to beexcused. The school may call to verify an absence if no telephone call is received. The Principal or his/herdesignee will determine if a requested absence is excused or unexcused.

Reasons for Excused Absences

1. Personal Illness

2. Appointments-Medical, Dental, Legal. Prior notice is required of these absences.

3. Family Crisis/Funeral

4. School Trips

5. Special Situations as determined by the Principal or his/her designee.

Unexcused absences

These are absences that are not for a bona fide reason see above list or have not been approved bythe Administration for acceptable reasons. All absences that the school has not been notified by theparents/guardians by phone or note will be unexcused. If there is any doubt about the absence being excused,call the Middle School office. Missed time by the student will result in make-up time after school. Unexcusedabsences may result in the loss of credit for work done or due during the absence and could result in loss of credit for the class. Students will be required to make up time hour for hour for absences.

Tardies

Tardies are a classroom disruption and will be handled as a disciplinary action. Students at LMS will be counted tardy if they are not in class at the end of the passing period unless excused by a staff member. Any students tardy to the first class of the day must report to the office before going to class. A student who is more than 15 minutes late to class will be consideredabsent. Tardies are cumulative for each class. The attendance secretaries will assign students consequences for tardiness according to the following schedule:

Note: Tardiness coming to school will result in a Child in Need of Care report being filed with SRS on the 16th tardy.

Perfect Attendance

Students will be awarded a certificate of perfect attendance if they meet the following criteria.

1. The student must be in attendance at school for all scheduled days.

2. Have had 3 or fewer unexcused tardy entries recorded.

3. Period absences can not exceed 4 in a class or in any one day.

General Rules

1. Students will not be allowed in the building before 7:30 a.m. unless they are working in the In-ProgressStudy session or working/studying with a teacher.

2. Students are to be seated in the gymnasium until the passing bell sounds at 8:10. Class will beginpromptly at 8:15 a.m.

3. No hats or sun glasses are to be worn in-doors, coats and jackets are permitted in class at teacher discretion.

4. Candy, gum or water are allowed in the classroom only with the permission of the classroom teacher. Nosunflower seeds in the building at any time.

5. Students are expected to be out of the building by 3:30 p.m. (2:30 PM on Fridays) unless involved in extracurricular activities,or working /studying with a teacher, or in the school library.

6. The school library is open and available to students until 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. Fridays)

7. Individual lockers are assigned to all students. Periodic and unannounced inspections will be made. Thestudent will clean up untidy lockers after school. Only locks provided by the office are to be used onstudent lockers.

8. Students are not to leave school during class time. A student leaving without clearance from theprincipal’s office will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action which may includesuspension from school in habitual cases. Special permission will be given by written or verbal parentrequest.

9. Students must have a written note from home and in most cases from a physician to be excused fromphysical education class.

10. Off campus lunch for students must be arranged through the office ahead of time. Students will not be permitted to call to arrange off campus lunch arrangements.

Student Dress and Appearance Guidelines

Because of relationship between appearance and appropriate behavior conducive to learning, theBoard of Education charges students with the responsibility to use common sense, decency and good taste intheir clothing. What is fashionable is not necessarily appropriate for school dress.The district reserves at all times the right to regulate the dress and grooming of students, dress that isdisruptive to the school day shall be seen as a dress code violation. Students shall maintain an acceptablelevel of personal hygiene and student’s attire will be neat and clean.Wearing apparel/grooming must meet administrative and staff approval. Any staff member whodeems a student has violated the dress code may request that the student come into compliance. Students who

refuse or repetitively violate the policy will be sent to the office for appropriate disciplinary measures. (See USD 405 Board of Educationpolicy #JCDB Dress Code).

Drinks in School

All drinks except water are prohibited in all classrooms, except for special occasions.

Lunch Hour Procedures and Rules

Meals are to be paid for in the office between 8:00 and 8:15 a.m. or after school. Tickets will not besold during class time. A student wishing to eat lunch at LyonsMiddle School has three options:

1. Bring a sack lunch.

2. Buy a lunch ticket.

3. Have money to buy lunch.

Lunches may not be charged. Lunches must be eaten in the school cafeteria. No food is to be takenout of the cafeteria. Students may go home for lunch if a parent or guardian calls the school each day or comes to pick uptheir student at the school. Students are to check out in the office on a daily basis when they leave thebuilding. Students abusing the noon hour by returning latewill be dealt with on an individual basis.

Gym and Playground Use

Students have 30 minutes for lunch. We would hope each student would take at least 15 minutes toeat. The remaining time may be spent on the playground or gym. A supervisor is in charge of lunch periods.Students who abuse lunchroom rules or fail to cooperate with the supervisor will receive ISS and will not beallowed to participate in the activity time at the end of the lunch period. Students who continually violatelunch period rules will be assigned to a study area during that period.

Valuables

Anything of value should not be left unattended or in open lockers. Valuable items should be leftwith one of the school secretaries during the day. Locks for lockers may be checked out form the office. Personal locks may not be used.

Lockers

No one, other than the individual to which the locker is assigned, is permitted to enter that locker. Parents who wish to place an item in their student’s locker must first get permission from the office. All middle school students will be assigned to a locker. Jackets, gym bags, purses and book bags must be leftin that locker during school hours. Locks for the lockers may be checked out from the office. Personalpadlocks are not to be used on school lockers. Students will be assessed the replacement cost of the locks if

they are not returned by the end of the school year.

USD 405 Discipline Guide Student Expectations

USD 405’s first priority is “Teaching and learning of the intended curriculum for all students,including misbehaving students.” To ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn, we are committedto maintaining a safe environment, an orderly environment, and a productive classroom environment for allstudents, including misbehaving students. This discipline policy is designed to teach, model and use appropriate consequences to ensure a safe,orderly and productive learning environment, and to exercise reasonable methods to change unacceptablebehaviors to acceptable ones. The discipline policy is intended to be fairly and equally enforced and isdesigned to respond with an appropriate discipline to violations of the behavior code. To accomplish thisgoal, USD 405 requests the support of the staff, students, parents and the community.
