A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah or Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. All students are to complete the reading guide for either novel. It is suggested that the guide be completed while reading.
A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Beah, now twenty-six years old, tells a powerfully gripping story: At the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he’d been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. At sixteen, he was removed from fighting by UNICEF, and through the help of the staff at his rehabilitation center, he learned how to forgive himself, to regain his humanity, and, finally, to heal.
Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston
An autobiography written by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. This story is about Jeanne Wakatsuki Huston's childhood, and her family’s experience when Pearl Harbor got bombed in the year of1941. Throughout the story Jeanne and her familygo throughan ambitiousstruggle such as: Getting moved to a boot camp that is penetrating, having to stuff their beds (in the camp) with hay which is pretty difficult to sleep on, and further.
