To encourage close observation of a small area of a painting and to focus attention on paint technique, texture and colour.
To reproduce a small section on a larger scale.

Reinforcement of secondary and tertiary colour mixing. / 1) Ask the pupils to select their favourite painting and then make a personal response to their chosen picture using similar tools etc. as the artist.
Make a thumbnail sketch in sketchbook to determine the main elements.
2) Reproduce a small section of the painting before starting the final study and practise making / mixing similar colours / textures, before attempting own interpretation.
3) Finally, choose paper colour carefully ~ a dark painting may require a darker base colour etc.
4) Ask the pupils to make a 2nd painting using different media / techniques e.g. original in oil/acrylic paints using palette knives -> pen and ink wash or watercolours etc.
During the class /personal evaluation of their work ask:-
‘Which of their own paintings do they prefer? Why?’
5) Make suitable frame for finished paintings.
6) Using a viewfinder isolate a small section of a painting and make a detailed drawing. Draw grid lines (2cm square) over the drawing. Use a larger grid (4cm. Squares) to enable enlargement. Paint in the style of the artist. /
