INFORMATION ABOUT PLACEMENTS

All placements are subject to confirmation by the relevant department. Students may be offered a placement in a department that is not on this list if a placement is subsequently secured by QUT.

Community Engaged Learning Lab (CELL) PROJECTS

The QUT Community Engaged Learning Lab (CELL) supports you to undertake community-based projects as part of your course. You will work across-faculties in multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with community partners on current issues challenging, communities. If you are applying for a CELL project you should review the list of projects available ( and include your preferred project in your application.

Community Clinics (require face to face attendance)

Caxton Legal Centre

Caxton Legal Centre is located in South Brisbane and offers free legal advice to people who are on a low income or who face other disadvantage. Students placed at this clinic will have the opportunity to work directly with clients assisting with interviews conducted by a volunteer lawyer and will also assist with file work and matters as requested by Caxton. Students are required to attend the clinic on one of Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

QPILCH (Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House) (This placement is semester two only)

QPILCH is a not-for-profit community based legal organisation that coordinates the provision of pro bono legal services for individuals and community groups. QPILCH refers civil law cases that meet its guidelines to firms and barristers for free legal assistance. Students placed at this clinic generally write case assessments that are used to determine whether applicants should be referred for free legal assistance and draft letters to applicants advising of the outcome. They also undertake research to create to information for both lawyers and lay persons. They may also interact with clients on the telephone.

Refugee and Immigration Legal Service (RAILS) (This placement is semester one only)

RAILS is an independent not-for-profit community legal centre specialising in refugee and immigration law. It provides free legal advice and assistance to disadvantaged people. RAILS is based in West End Brisbane. Students placed at this clinic will have the opportunity to work directly with clients assisting with interviews and protection visa applications and undertake country research. Students also prepare and hold seminars for their colleagues. Students need to be able to attend the clinic one day per week (generally on Thursday).

Prisoners Legal Service

Prisoners’ Legal Service, Inc. is a community legal centre providing free legal advice to incarcerated persons and their families on matters relating to imprisonment. Prisoners’ Legal Service is based in South Brisbane, Queensland. Students placed at this clinic assist with the assessment of applications for assistance and provide information to clients by telephone. Students need to be able to attend the clinic one day per week.

Qld Aged & Disability Advocacy (QADA)

QADA is a not-for-profit community-based advocacy service for people with issues relating to age and disability eg guardianship, residential care services, QCAT applications. Students work under the supervision of volunteer lawyers on projects which provide information, education, support and representation for QADA clients and the broader community. Wynnum Manly Community Legal Service

Wynnum Manly Community Legal Service is a not-for-profit community organisation that provides legal services to the community. Students need to be able to attend the service at Wynnum Manly one day per week. Students placed at this clinic will have the opportunity to work directly with clients assisting with interviews conducted by a volunteer lawyer and will also assist with file work and matters as requested by WMCLS.

Tenants’ Union Qld (TUQ)

TUQ is a statewide community organisation that provides services for residential tenants in Queensland and represents their interests, including caravan park and boarding house residents. Students are supervised by volunteer lawyers and work on projects such as tenancy publications, community education activities, tenancy law training,research on tenancy issues, policy development and tenancy law reform campaigns. Lesbian Gay Bisexual TransIntersex Legal Service (LGBTI)

Students at this clinic undertake research and complete a project in relation to an issue identified by the LGBTI community organisation. Students create information resources for lawyers and lay people and an emphasis is placed on raising awareness in the community of legal rights. Students may be able to undertake this clinic virtually.

Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital

Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is a 929-bed quaternary and tertiary referral teaching hospital located at Herston within the Metro North Health Service District, close to the Brisbane CBD. It is a key provider of health care services for Queensland Health. Students will work under the supervision of practising lawyers in the Legal Services division of Queensland Health which is based at the hospital. Students will be able to take part in a research project investigating the use of Advanced Health Care Directives and conducting surveys and interviews with medical professionals. Arts Law Centre of Australia (Arts Law)

Arts Law is a not-for-profit company established with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts in 1983 to provide specialised legal and business advice and referral services, professional development resources and advocacy for artists and arts organisations. Arts Law provides legal advice and information on a wide range of arts related legal and business matters including contracts, copyright, business structures, defamation, insurance, employment and taxation to artists and arts organisations across all art forms (including music).Students work on projects relating to legal rights of artists under the supervision of lawyers.
