Foam & Foggeddaboudit!!

State of the Art of the Spray Foam Industry

Spray applied foam has continued to grow in popularity as a high performance and easy way to achieve continuous water, air, vapour and thermal control layers. Even challenging interface details quickly disappear under a blanket of foam! But where are we at with respect to acceptance and use of these products? This session will explore the state of the art practices of the spray foam industry. Are we really confident in believing these products will achieve building envelope durability? Is using spray foam environmentally responsible; can we trust efforts to ‘green certify’ these products or should we be using alternate insulations that are more ‘eco-friendly’? What about fire-safety considerations associated with use of combustible foamed plastics?

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Richard Duncan, Technical Director - Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (USA):Rick will deliver a registered AIA continuing education program via the web from Fairfax Virginia. He will introduce the evolution of spray foam technologies and provide a US perspective on the direction of the industry. He will discuss the influences and limitations pertaining to growth in the spray foam industry, including the American practice of spray foaming un-vented attics.

Pierre Couture, Business Manager - BASF:With 28 years of experience at BASF, Pierre will deliver his view of the spray foam industry, and how their products have evolved to meet performance and environmental needs. This includes their having achieved ‘GreenGuard’ and ‘Ecologo’ product certifications. He will close with interesting case studies.

Paul Duffy, VP Engineering - Icynene:Paul will bring more than 30 years of building envelope experiencein presenting the Icynene view of the SPF industry, including spray foam products made from castor beans and those that incorporate recycled content. Product certifications that their products have achieved include ‘USDA Biopreferred’, ‘SM’ and ‘ICC’. Paul will also present interesting case studies.

Andrew Cole, Chair - Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors Association: Andrew will present the CUFCA role in promoting spray foam as an air/vapour/thermal control layers, their work promoting research and development and how they interacting with other organizations. He will also speak of their efforts to introduce a manufacturer and contractor certification program to further promote industry quality control.
