We hosted the Interclub today and Keith Berkhout of the brand new Tri-County Club presented the gavel. Representatives from the DeKalb Club, the Sycamore Club, the Tri-County Club, and Circle K Club were in attendance.
Veronica Mata of Circle K announced Circle K's biggest fund raiser for Spastic Paralysis Research. On January 8, 2011, Holiday Embrace will be held at the Double Tree Hotel in Oak Brook. For registration information, go to: Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with dinner being served at 6:30 followed by the dance, which begins at 8:00 p.m. Bring your sweetie and start out your new year with a dinner dance with the proceeds going to a great cause. Dinner & Dance is $45.00/person. Dance only is $20.00/person.
Peter Laws – Bell Ringing. Peter announced that the bell ringing went well and we have Michael Cho to thank for the good weather. Janet Byrnes had a special assistant for her bell ringing time. It seems that Santa was in town double-checking some lists he had received -- one of them was from Tony Chulick who stated that all he wanted for Christmas was to be appointed to the Police and Fire Commission (piece o' cake!) -- so Santa had time to lend a hand and add a smile to all the kids he saw. Thank you to all the bell ringers and a special thank you to Santa.

P.o.P. Box:
Jerry Smith decided we needed to put our District Governor, Larry Forsberg (of the Sycamore Club in our small but mighty Division 14) on the P.o.P. Box today. Jerry asked Larry to say a few things about himself and his family – "in a minute or so." As you all know, there is no such time increment as "one minute" to Larry, but he was surprisingly brief. Larry lives in Clare, which he proudly states is the smallest town in the state with its own post office. The last person who moves into town is both the mayor and the police chief. Larry has been doing a great job as our governor and he also thanked Mike Mooney for the use of the car to get him to his various Kiwanis commitments. Larry and his wife, Steph, will be celebrating an anniversary this weekend and will be surrounded by children and grandchildren for the holidays. They are a lovely family and Larry is a dedicated Kiwanian. We thank him for his service! It should also be noted that Larry had on a green sweater and Jerry had on a red sweater and a Christmas “Belly Bump” was suggested. That would have been a sight to behold!

NIU Staff Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste presented today's program. Gilbert visits our club on an annual basis and always presents a wonderful program. Today was no exception. Gilbert has the ability that even when delivering news such as, "extremely cold for Christmas day," you can't hate him as you feel the urge to do with other weather people. Gilbert LOVES weather and can spend 18 hours a day just looking at the sky saying, "Cool!" Gilbert gave the year in review in weather and noted how it started out, but his highlight came on June 5, with a cluster of tornadoes south of us. We were particularly luck to get Gilbert at lunchtime as that is when he is usually posting his forecast. Go to and you will see something along these lines. It's a great website and contains a lot of information.
