UPDATE MAY 17

Lucy Edmunds representing GB

Lu Edmunds has continued to perform outstandingly well representing Great Britain in the European Championships. Earlier in the month Lucy was one of six girl scullers who were selected to represent Great Britain at Munich Junior International regatta where Lucy and her partner won the B final in double sculls. On the second day of racing, Lucy’s double teamed up with another top junior double to compete in the quadruple sculls. They excelled in this event, coming fourth and missing out on a medal by a small margin.

Last weekend Lucy was one of three junior girls selected to represent GB at the European Junior Championships. Though Lucy and her partner, Beth Wilford-Dutton from Northwich had only one weekend training together, they managed to cruise through their heat and semi final, to gain a place in the A final of this very competitive event. Although they missed out on a medal this was more valuable experience prior to the final trials in July for the main championship events of the season.

Boathouse development update

We are currently trying to get clarity on the City of York Council’s proposals for our new lease. We need a new lease or at least firm proposals on their intentions to allow us to consider grant applications. Members should be assured that it is the Committee’s intention to progress the redevelopment of the boathouse to improve our facilities. Later this summer there will be major works to prolong the life of the roof, and we are also looking to refurbish the changing rooms, the toilets and shower. The extent of this work will depend on the information received from CYC regarding the lease renewal.

Please speak to Phil Press if you have any specific queries.

Keep warm and safe

It may be sunny, but a British spring day can still be quite cold. Very recently one of the club’s most experienced scullers developed mild hypothermia at a regatta as she did not have sufficient clothing in the boat with her. She recognised the signs and got help very quickly, but it is a reminder to everyone. Even the best run regattas can mean spending considerable time in cool and damp conditions, so make sure you have plenty of warm, waterproof clothing with you. And if the sun does come out, don’t forget the sunscreen.

Volunteers needed York Summer and the Dragon Boat races

We need loads of volunteers for two upcoming events. The York Summer Regatta takes place on Sunday, 18th June and volunteers are needed for the vast number of jobs that need doing. Please do offer to help by contacting Anne Homa on .

The Dragon Boat races will take place on Sunday, 9th July. It’s run by the Rotary Club, but YCRC hosts it and it is one of our biggest money makers from catering. Volunteers are needed to help with catering and the bar; please do contact Alex Evans on f you are able to help at all. It’s a great event, fabulous fun and it is an important part of our community support.

Defibrillator

Thanks to Pete Rigby putting in a bid to the Micklegate Ward fund, we now have a defibrillator that will be sited on the outside of the boathouse. It comes with 8 training places and there are still a couple left. If you would like to be trained in its use, please let Pete know as soon as possible – .

Taster sessions

Once again we are running taster session during the summer. If you know someone who might be interested, please do encourage them to attend. Details are on our web site and the sessions are running on the following dates:

-Saturday 1st July 10:30

-Saturday 15th July 10.30

-Saturday 29th July 10.30

-Saturday 5th August 10.30

They are £10 per person, bookable through Webcollect.

Understanding the new ranking system for competitions

I know that there are many people who are rather bemused by the new ranking system for competitions that is being introduced. To try to clear the haze, a presentation covering the effect of the new ranking index and BROE2 online entry system on competitions will take place at 7.30 pm on Tuesday June 20th at the Club.

May - Captains Message

Another great month for the club and all crews getting ready for the Summer Regatta Circuit, which

is great to see!

There are great many members in the club of varying levels of experience, with some members

achieving greatness winning a medal at Henley Royal Regatta and others getting the

opportunity to go out in a single scull for the first time. To the members of the club that have

achieved greatness in their goals and ambitions, you all offer as an incredible inspiration to other

members to allow them to see what may be achievable to them in the future.

It is vital that members of great experience at York City Rowing Club encourage, teach, mentor and

pass on their knowledge to our new members or members of less experience in our great club!

A few quotes….

“In vain you have acquired knowledge, if you have not imparted it to others.” Deuteronomy

Rabbah

“In the long history of humankind (and animal kind too) those who learned to collaborate and

improvise most effectively have prevailed.” Charles Darwin

“The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. Its Never any use to oneself.” Oscar Wilde

Have a great month everyone……

Many Thanks…

Sean Potter - Club Captain

Pictures for the website

A plea from Carl – please send him more high quality photos for the website – . There have been some fabulous pictures circulating – let’s get them up as you, the members, are the best publicity we could possibly want!

And finally

Last but by no means least, a very warm welcome to our new member Lynn Wait who has joined the L&P squad.
