TheLSE Reconnect with Research programme is open to UK-based refugee or asylum-seeking scholars who would benefit from enhanced English language support and introduction to the UK Higher Education system.

Who can apply?

  • Applicants must be based in the UK. They will either have refugee status (or equivalent) or be in the process of applying for (or considering applying for) asylum in the UK.
  • Applicants must have worked as a Lecturer or Researcher in a university or higher education institution in their country of origin.
  • Applicants must have a good level of English(between IELTS 5 and 7.5). It is not necessary to take an IELTS test. Applicant’s language level will be assessed via the written application and an informal interview.

The course, held by way of a two-hour class on twelveTuesday evenings, will provide practical help with a broad range of language skills and provide training on presenting and discussing research work. Academic and research specialists will offer expert guidance, drawing on their own knowledge and experience. In addition to training and support in written and spoken English in an academic context, participants will be guided in the use of various online tools for teaching, research and communicating. Participants will haveborrowing rights and full access to the LSE Library for the duration of the course.

The course is provided free of charge. In addition, participants will be awarded a small travel grant (the equivalent of an advance return fare) in support of travel costs for each of the twelve classes.

While we anticipate that the course will be of great value to refugee and asylum-seekingscholars seeking to navigate their way around the UK Higher Education system, applicants should be aware that participationwill not lead to a formal qualification nor provide priority access to other LSE programmes, courses or employment opportunities.
