The LSO’s mission is to give the finest performances of music and make them available to the greatest number of people.

LSO Development

The London Symphony Orchestra currently raises over £4 million a year from the private sector, with ambitions to substantially increase income over the next three years. The objective of the Development Department is to generate this income for the Orchestra from corporate sponsorship, individual donations and membership schemes, trusts and foundations and the statutory sector across all aspects of the LSO’s activities both in the UK and internationally.

Role Objective

  • To support the Individual Giving Manager in the development and management of high-level individual giving schemes
  • To support the Friends & Grants Coordinator with the administration of the LSO Friends scheme
  • To support the Major Events & Endowment Manager to administrate fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events
  • To support the Development team to research prospect funders
  • To undertake individual projectworkto support the Development team.

Reporting to: Individual Giving Manager

Duration: 6 months at five days a week.

N.B. this is a voluntary position; the LSO will pay reasonable travel expenses and a lunch allowance.

Key Duties:

  • Supporting the Individual Giving Manager in providing excellent stewardship to our existing individual donors including concert ticket requests in London and abroad, general correspondence and regular mailings, managing donor details using Raiser's Edge database and assisting with preparations for LSO Patrons tours and special events.
  • Assisting the Individual Giving Manager with research into potential individual donors as required.
  • Assisting the Friends & Grants Coordinator with the administration of the LSO Friends scheme including the processing of membership renewals, compilation of financial reports, Direct Debits and Gift Aid declarations, and the production of regular mailings and communications to LSO Friends.
  • Supporting the Friends & Grants Coordinator in recruiting new members and ensuring the retention of existing members.
  • Assisting the Development department with the preparation and management of Individual Giving events including the coordination of event responses, designing event invitations and programmes, and liaising with guests where necessary.

Other duties:

  • Undertaking occasional concert duty at the Barbican.
  • Assisting with other department activities on an ad hoc basis and any other duties as reasonably requested by the Development Director.

Job training opportunities:

This is a superb opportunity for somebody hoping to work in the competitive fields of the arts or thevoluntary sector.This role will provide first-hand experience of administrating Individual Giving schemes and Events for a major arts organisation as well as independent project and research work. A working knowledge of the industry standard Raiser’s Edge database will also beacquired.

During their 6 month internship, the LSO anticipates that interns will develop the necessary skills to secure full-time employment.

  • Able to communicate with people at all levels.
  • Confident, polite and friendly manner.
  • Enthusiastic, capable and adaptable; a good team player with a positive attitude prepared to help out with other department tasks where necessary.
  • Calm and level-headed, able to manage a busy workload.
  • Good attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Outlook and Excel packages.

Desirable:

  • Possess a degree, and/or work experience gained in the arts or voluntary sectors.
  • Experience of using databases, such as Raiser’s Edge.
