Job Statement

An Inspirational Speech and Language Therapist is required across the TBAP West from Spring 2017 or sooner, to work as a member of the TBAP Therapeutic Services Team. You will provide specialist one to one and group sessions to primary and secondary age learners who have been excluded from mainstream school many of whom have speech, language and communication difficulties which are often undiagnosed. Successful candidates will be responsible for providing evidence based interventions from assessment through to discharge and robustly recording progress using recognised outcomes measures.

Key responsibilities

1.  To identify and prioritise a caseload of learners in liaison with Lead Therapist, SEN Lead and Director’s of Access and Inclusion and provide individualised, evidence based interventions to meet their needs

2.  To apply clinical knowledge and skills in 1:1 and group interventions with clients with complex speech, language and communication needs, including brief, medium and long-term work.

3.  To maintain accurate records in accordance with Trust guidelines.

4.  To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team made up of school staff and external professionals and to establish and maintain excellent communication with all partners

5.  To provide written and verbal feedback about interventions in a variety of forms that are suitable for a range of audiences including young people, their families and other professionals

6.  To have an understanding of the key issues impacting on young people who access alternative provision

7.  To accept referrals identified by local Senior Leadership Teams.

8.  To respond sensitively at all times to the emotional needs of clients and their carers when working together.

9.  To provide training, support and guidance to school staff enabling them to better identify and support learners with complex communication needs.

10.  To attend case conferences, handovers, CP or CIN meetings, Annual Reviews and other clinical meetings, when possible, taking responsibility for communicating with professionals within the wider community and learners’ families and carers, within the boundaries of confidentiality

11.  To be a registered member of RCSLT and HPC adhering to clinical guidelines and standards of practice

12.  To manage difficult and demanding clinical situations arising from working with clients with challenging social, emotional, speech, language and communication needs, including exploring complex, sensitive and disturbing personal issues in one to one and group sessions.

13.  To deal with conflict and resolve difficulties arising in clinical interventions

14.  To actively participate in audits in relation to service evaluation and development

15.  To work flexibly and innovatively according to the demands of the service and to perform duties within the competence of the post holder. This may include referring onto external agencies with appropriate consent from clients or parents and carers (such as CAMHS, WLAC or MST).

16.  To attend regular Line Management with the TBAP Head of Therapeutic Services and to arrange and access suitable external supervision in accordance with RCSLT/HPC guidelines in order to ensure a high standard of practice through on-going evaluation and peer reference/reviews.

17.  To be responsible for the maintenance of the therapeutic space as a safe and secure therapeutic environment within clinical sessions.
