Feedback from June 23, 2011 Principals’ Meeting

Logistically, how will your school deliver the 5th/6th compacted math course?

Suggestions for 5th/6th Compacted Math
  • AIG will teach daily
  • AG teacher
  • AG teacher, if absent or tracked out, a 5th grade teacher will teach
  • Hired a 5th grade teacher who taught 6th grade last year & she is AG certified
  • AG teacher will teach it 5 days per week during the 5th grade math block
  • My 5th grade uses flex groups. AG teacher will team teach with 5th grade
  • 100% AG teacher is working with 5th grade math teacher to co-teach
  • Since we don’t have full-time AG teacher, we will use Math Intervention/Enrichment teacher
  • AG teacher is 100%, perhaps she will push into one particular 5th grade classroom. When she’s tracked out, 5th grade teacher takes over.
  • Added MOE to AG teacher to make 100%.
  • Converted intervention MOE to make AG teacher 100%.
  • Two students on different tracks – will see if I can get them both on same track.
  • 100% AG Teacher
  • AG & 5th grade teacher will team teach
  • AG teacher – 3 days/week; 5th grade teacher – 2 days/week
  • AIG teacher will work with 2 trained 5th grade teachers to deliver instruction
  • AG will teach 5 days a week when tracked in; enrichment/classroom teacher will teach when tracked out
  • 100% AG teacher will teach 5 days/week for 60 minutes.
  • We will flex group students across the grade level for math. In the top group, we will have all our level 4s. We will teach 5th grade curriculum to all. The non-compacted students will work on 5th grade activities with help 3 days/week from classroom teacher. The compacted group will be taught 6th grade curriculum during this time.
  • 4 days/week by AG teacher; 1 day/week by 5th grade teacher
  • Will deliver instruction with 5th grade teacher and AIG teacher
  • 5 days/week with 100% AIG teacher
  • 100% AG, 5 days/week, 60 minutes
  • AG teacher, ordered 6th grade math books
  • AG Basics – all teachers in AG Basics are AG certified. Pretest concepts & teach 5 and 6 objectives at the same time. 1 hour 30 minute block.
  • Dedicate time for AG teacher to pull kids and teach 6th grade curriculum
  • Leaning towards AG teacher pulling AIG students 4 days/week and 1 day in regular classroom if possible
  • AG teacher will be teaching across 3 tracks. She will need to block the curriculum in order to deliver instruction.
  • Our IRT (who has AG certification) will be delivering instruction
  • AIG teacher will deliver direct instruction. Reinforced in reg.ed.
  • AIG teacher will teach compacted math when tracked in. Classroom teacher will when tracked out.
  • AG teacher will teach 5/6 when 5th grade is teaching math.
  • Full-time AG teacher
  • *** School has a 60% AIG teacher. She does not have another school. She will plan all lessons, teach 3 days/week, and I (the principal) will teach the other 2 days.
  • AG teacher in collaboration with 5th classroom teachers
  • 100% AG teacher will teach daily
  • My AIG teacher is shared across 2 schools. I plan to collaborate with the other principal to find a way to split her across both of our schools, but still have her there on a daily basis.

What questions or concerns do you still have?

Questions or Concerns:
  • For those schools who do not have students for the compacted math this year, will there be training opportunities next year or when the need occurs?
Yes, schools with no students identified for the 2011-2012 school year do not need to send AIG or classroom teachers to the summer training. Next year will begin our transition to the Common Core State Standards, which means the curriculum will change for the 2012-2013 school year. As a result, the curriculum covered during training may change We will offer ongoing support each year.
  • How in the world do we do this with 1 AG teacher across 4 tracks?
The curriculum will have to be chunked in order to accomplish delivering the 5th/6th compacted course in year-round schools. We will offer year-round teachers an opportunity to form cohorts where they can brainstorm and plan solutions to this challenge.
  • Can principals and AIG teachers make a site-based decision to instruct recommended students who were not approved in 5th/6th compacted math?
We encourage all schools to use the criteria to identify students eligible for the 5th/6th compacted course. This will promote consistency and equity across the county. However, we do recognize that exceptions are necessary and the SBCGE/principal will make all final placement decisions.
  • How should schools handle students who meet eligibility criteria and enroll after the start of the year or transfer between schools during this time?
If students transfer within the district, they will be offered the 5th/6th compacted course at the new school. This was one of the reasons for developing a county-wide curriculum and pacing guide. Teachers will be filling out 5/6 profile cards & this should be part of the students’ records (with work samples as outlined on the front of the profile card). If students are new to the district, the SBCGE/principal will need to make decisions about placement. However, all students should meet the criteria as outlined by the district. Depending on the time of year the transfer occurs, it may be too late in the year for the student to adequately receive a compacted curriculum.
  • Does 5/6 compacted count as their AG math service?
Yes, as long as it is delivered by an AG certified teacher.
  • What if you have an AIG teacher that has never taught math?
We will be conducting two staff development sessions (one 1stsemester and one 2nd semester) that will give a brief overview of the essential skills and objectives. At this training, we will help facilitate the creation of cohort groups. It would be essential for this teacher to join one of these groups and collaborate with other teachers across the districtwho are teacher 5th/6th compacted math. It might also be encouraged for the AIG teacher to join the 5th grade PLT/common planning time for additional support.
  • *** School has a 40% AIG teacher, what model would you recommend for fidelity?
The answer to this question will vary depending on the staffing plan at your school. We would recommend using the 40% AIG teacher as much as possible (some schools have decided to split the AG teachers across days instead of weeks). This way, the course would count as their AIG math service. Please read the above feedback from other principals in how they are handling this challenge.
  • What do I do with new students who enroll from other districts and are AG identified in their former district? If they meet the criteria, can my SBGE make the decision?
Students new to Wake County will be decided upon by the SBCGE. We recommend using the same criteria to identify these students. If the students transfer in the middle of the school year, it may be too late for them to adequately receive the compacted course.
