General Summary:

The tugboat operator commands the tugboat to tow barges into and out of harbors, estuaries, straits, and sounds. The operator signals workers on deck to rig towlines to barges or ship to be towed. The captain determines the course and towing speed on the basis of specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current steering the tugboat to push barges to destination and to berth and unberth ships.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities: Include the following:

·  Responsible for coordinating and overseeing crew members daily activities such as loading or unloading cargo, steering vessels, operating engines, and operating, maintaining, or repairing ship equipment

·  Schedule, perform and document boat maintenance and safety checks daily to assure it is safe operating condition at all times

·  Schedule, maintain and document maintenance on boats or equipment on board, such as engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, and life preservers

·  Create and disperse daily Vessel Log Reports to supervisor

·  Mobilization and de-mobilization of floating equipment to various job sites as directed

·  Move floating equipment safely and timely per project guidelines on project site as directed

·  Perform duties to meet or exceed project requirements and/or specifications

·  All other duties as assigned

Secondary Functions:

·  Perform deck hand and laborer duties as needed

·  Observe and report mechanical failures and sees that the repairs are accomplished

Job Scope:

This job has recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm. Duties involve a moderate degree of complexity due to the nature of tug boat operation Duties are performed with established procedures and guidelines. On a regular and continuous basis, exercises managerial judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service with in the functional area.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises the deck hand and crane operator

All persons aboard while navigating waterways

Interpersonal Contacts:

Contacts are made on a daily basis with the deck hand, crane operator, General Manager, field superintendent, project manager, and the Coast Guard.

Specific Skills:

·  Good eye hand coordination

·  Good vision

·  Knowledge of areas of operation

Education and/or Experience:

·  Requires a Coast Guard License up to 100 ton

·  On the job training (record of service)

·  First Aid/CPR

·  Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Job Conditions:

·  Normal for a barge operation

· 

·  Requires hours that exceed 40 per week especially during peek times

Physical Demands:

·  Ability to sit for long periods of time

·  Ability to lift up to 80lbs.

·  Requires good vision for navigation

·  Ability to climb stairs to get to the wheel house

Special Equipment:

·  Tug boat /barge

Measures:

Measures will be set in place to quantify and evaluate employee quality and performance. Measures for this position will be based on the following criteria, and be provided to employee with explanation of standards required.

Safety is the most important issue at MIC. Employee performance will be based on team and individual incident rates on projects and as a whole.

·  Schedule/Production

Employee performance will be based on team and individual performance with regard to meeting project schedule and production rates.

·  Budget

Employee performance will be based on team performance with regard to meeting budget constraints on a project by project basis within the control of the employee.

·  Quality

Employee performance will be based on team and individual performance with regard to meeting quality requirements as set forth within project specifications on a project by project basis within my control.
