Dear Mr Cole,

As you are aware your correspondence dated 6 March 2013 has been considered to be a request for information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000. You requested the following:

A number of claims of successful implementation of MAJIIC-based capabilities have been made in the Open Media, largely by the NATO Technical Leadership and Project Managers. The NATO MAJIIC Technical Leadership also stated that they 'had 100 million Euros to spend and that the UK was one of 9 Nations providing funding for MAJIIC. In this context, I have the following FOI Act requests: How much has the MOD spent on MAJIIC Phase 1 (MAJIIC 1)? How much has the MOD spent on MAJIIC Phase 2 (MAJIIC 2) so far and how much remains unspent? Which Government agencies or other entities did this MAJIIC 1 money go to and how much to each? Which Government agencies or other entities did this MAJIIC 2 money go to and how much to each? What MOD equipment acquisition programmes have used data standards developed by MAJIIC? To what extent were these MAJIIC-developed data standards expressly approved and ratified by the MOD as NATO STANAGS and when were they approved for NATO Standardisation Agency promulgation? What is the cost to Defence of each of the equipment acquisition programmes or projects which have used MAJIIC-developed data standards? Which of these programmes or projects were accepted into operational use and when? To what extent were MAJIIC-developed data standards expressly approved and ratified by the MOD as NATO STANAGS and when were they approved for NATO Standardisation Agency promulgation? What extent does the MOD believe that the UK element of the MAJIIC programme has delivered significant improvements in Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance support to UK forces operating in Afghanistan? What evidence does the MOD have that the NATO implementation of MAJIIC data standards in its Crisis Urgent Operational Requirements (CUR) programmes - funded via UK-contributive Common Funding - has delivered significant improvements in Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance support to Coalition forces, including UK forces, operating in Afghanistan.

I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I am writing to advise you that following a search of our paper and electronic records, we do hold information falling within the terms of your requests for information. This is summarised below.

See response to sixth question.

What extent does the MOD believe that the UK element of the MAJIIC programme has delivered significant improvements in Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance support to UK forces operating in Afghanistan?

Extract from “Op HERRICK 13 – TH UAS BTY Post Operational Report“ Ref 2RA/321 dated 13 Jun 2011:

“The proliferation of extremely capable and networked B ISTAR platforms has revolutionised Bde and CF targetting. Coupled with the ATTACKER image reference library, the real time exploitation of IMINT within the Bde on behalf of TFH, coupled with credible, organic secondary analysis has created a considerable boost to TFH”

What evidence does the MOD have that the NATO implementation of MAJIIC data standards in its Crisis Urgent Operational Requirements (CUR) programmes - funded via UK-contributive Common Funding – has delivered significant improvements in Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance support to Coalition forces, including UK forces, operating in Afghanistan?
