PROGRAM FOR THE GATHERING

FRIDAY 21st OCTOBER: REGISTRATION and RECEPTION 6:30 pm - 10:30 pm.

Location: Southbank Room, Lakes Resort Hotel, West Lakes.

The doors will be open at 6:30 pm for mingling and talking, with the official opening happening about 8 pm. It will be a great opportunity to meet other members, compare family genealogies, view the display of Butler Society items, etc. Finger food will be served throughout the evening. A bar will be set up in the room for members to purchase their own drinks.

The honourable Mark Butler, Federal Member for Port Adelaide, will be present, and has kindly agreed to talk to us about his family history. Mark’s Great-Great-Grandfather, Sir Richard Butler, was Premier of SA in 1905, and his Great-Grandfather, Sir Richard Layton Butler, was twice Premier. Other members of this family, including Mark, have also made notable contributions to the development of the State.

SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER: Pt ADELAIDE & MALLALA TOUR 9:00am – 6:00pm.

Starting Point: Main Carpark, Lakes Resort Hotel, West Lakes.

A tour of historic Port Adelaide, including places which feature in the story of Elijah Henry and

Charles John Butler’s family, with morning tea in a local church hall. Then on to the small town

ofMallala, where Philip Butler, father of Sir Richard Butler, had a large property. We will visit

the historic homestead,and the local Museum which contains Butler memorabilia, and have lunch in the Institute Hall, where early Butlers took part in concerts and other social events

Cost: $70 per person.

SUNDAY 23rd OCTOBER: HISTORY FORUM / SOCIETY MEETING 10:00am – 4:30pm.

Location: Southbank Room, Lakes Resort Hotel, West Lakes.

In the morning there will be illustrated talks on various Butlers of Port Adelaide. There will also be a genealogy forum to discuss matters such as setting up a central database for family histories, etc. Items from the Archive will be on display. Any issues raised by members about the Butler Society will be discussed in the afternoon, and actions resolved if necessary. Morning and afternoon tea, and a light lunch will be served.

Cost: $50 per person.

SUNDAY 23rd OCTOBER: EVENING DINNER CRUISE 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

Starting Point: “The Princess”, on the Lake beside the Lakes Resort Hotel.

We will cruise the attractive waterways of West Lakes, while enjoying a three course meal and watching the sun set. (Drinks can be purchased separately from the bar on board.)

Cost: $55 per person.

MONDAY 24th OCTOBER: MINLATON DAY TRIP 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Starting Point: Main Carpark, Lakes Resort Hotel, West Lakes.

The coach will leave the hotel and travel to Port Wakefield, where we will stop for morning tea at a local café which has been established in a local church.

Then on to the small country town of Minlaton, where the WW1 ace pilot, Captain John Henry (“Harry”) Butler was born. After the war, brought his plane, ‘The Red Devil’, back to Minlaton and established an airfreight / passenger business. The plane, which is believed to be the only 200 Bristol M. 1C Monoplane now existing in the world, has been restored and is on display in a purpose built “hanger”. A memorial statue of Harry was unveiled next to his plane in October last year and there are many interesting items of memorabilia to see in the local museum.

A 2-course lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

Cost: $70 per person.
