I. HEALTH ASSESSMENTS
A. Students new to the state, 9th graders, and Special Education and Special Referral
students are screened for vision, hearing, immunization status, and health status.
Ongoing services are provided to all students as needed.
B. The school nurse is available to assist students for medical / dental referrals,
pregnancy problems, drug / alcohol referrals, child abuse / neglect, sex education,
sexually transmitted diseases, and crisis intervention. Services are confidential
unless there are life- threatening implications.
II. READMISSIONS
A. Students absent for 5 days or longer must be referred to the school nurse for
readmittance. Students returning after a prolonged illness or with casts, crutches, or
braces must bring a doctor’s note and be readmitted by the School Nurse. School
nurse can call for verification based upon assessment.
B. In the event that teachers or counselors receive information regarding the prolonged
absence of a student due to accident, illness, or injury, they should contact the school
nurse, since the student may be eligible for home teaching.
III. EMERGENCY CARDS
All emergency cards are on file in the Health Office. It is the responsibility of parents
and students to return them completed and to keep them up-to-date.
IV. STUDENTS SENT TO THE HEALTH OFFICE
A. Students can be sent to the Health Office but must have a pass from the student’s
teacher or a staff member. Students need to present their ID to the nurse or staff
upon arrival.
B.The school nurse will evaluate the situation and determine whether the student
needs to rest or be sent home.
C. Parents will be contacted for permission to release students. Students can not leave
campus without consent from parent.
V. MEDICATION
The school nurse does not administer aspirin or Tylenol to students or staff. Students
requiring special medication must have a form signed by the parent and the doctor.
VI. ATHLETIC EXAMS
A. Students are encouraged to receive private physical exams from their own physician.
B. Forms are available from the Athletic Coaches and must be completed and signed by
a parent or guardian and submitted to the coach. For any questions regarding
medical clearance, student/athlete must see Athletic Director First.
VII. IMMUNIZATIONS
A. California law requires that all students enrolled in school present evidence of
immunizations and Mantoux Test (T.B.)
B. No student will be admitted without immunizations. Those who fail to complete the
series will be notified by U.S. mail. If there is no response, exclusion will follow.
VIII. STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS
A confidential card will be circulated to teachers concerning students who have special
health problems. Students suspected of having medical problems, such as hearing or
vision defects, should be referred to the school nurse.
IX. CONSULTATION
The school nurse is available to students, parents, and staff for special consultation and
for classroom, Advisory Council or staff presentations.
