LOCAL NEWS KEY TO REACHING MOMS

GENERATION DEVOTED TO STREAMING VIDEO

Nielsen says that moms spent $165 billion in 2016, and the research suggest that local news is an effective way for advertisers to reach those consumers and their dollars. Nielsen’s Local Watch Report for the third quarter of 2016 focused on the media consumption of moms in two categories, working moms and stay-at-home moms. The report shows that working moms across the local people metered markets watch more early morning and late news, and stay-at-home moms watch more mid-day and evening news, with stay-at-home moms spending an additional hour per day with the TV screen.

Nielsen found that digital plays a significant role in the media consumption of moms. Mothers are more than 21% more likely than other women to have downloaded a media app in the last month. The report went on to point out that over a 30-day period, 53% of moms visited a broadcast media website compared to 37% of the average female.

The study found that moms are 47% more likely to consume local news on a mobile platform, and they are 59% more likely to use that platform for information about local and community events. Moms are 36% more likely to use mobile apps for traffic and weather, and 50% of moms say they’d like to get location-based coupons on their cell phone.

NIELSEN OFFERS LIMITED RELEASE OF TCR

After a meeting with media clients last week, Nielsen has decided that its much-anticipated Total Content Ratings will get a limited release on March 1st. The research company had originally set January 1st as a date for its media clients to analyze TCR data online. Data that they hope will give them an accurate picture of all linear and digital TV program viewing. Instead, Nielsen has been providing off-line reports. Jessica Hogue SVP of product leadership at Nielsen told Television Daily News that “Publishers will be able to use their own data – but not competitive data – externally.” That means that as of March 1st, publishers like TV networks and video content owners can share their data, but not their competitors, with media agencies, the press or other business concerns. TV Networks were hoping to use the new TCR for the upfronts which will occur later this spring and summer. Nielsen says the request for the delay came from the TV networks.

Total Content Ratings are designed to consolidate all traditional, digital and other TV/video viewing under one measurement system.

COMPETITIVE INFO

Nielsen’s December radio ratings show the all-Christmas format had another strong year, even though the survey ran through January 4 and listenership usually peaks on Christmas Day. Inside Radio reports Adult Contemporary stations flip to the Christmas format more often than other radio formats and AC delivered a 12.8 share among persons 6+ to lead all formats during the survey period.

The other hot format right now is—for obvious reasons— News/Talk. Even in December, a month after the election, the format recorded a 9.0 share among persons 6+, a two-thirds improvement over the 5.4 share news/talk had in 2015.

CPO SHOULD SET ANOTHER RECORD

Sales of Certified Pro-Owned vehicles set its sixth straight record in 2016, and auto analysts feel that record will fall immediately this year. CPO sales reached 2.6 million units last year, 3.5% better than in 2015, and with an expected surge in vehicles coming off of leases this year, analysts expect even more CPO sales in 2017.

Currently, according to Cox Automotive Media Group, CPO sales are just 21% of used-vehicle sales at franchised dealerships, so there’s plenty of opportunity for dealers to grow that segment of their business. Recent studies have found customers are willing to pay more for a certified vehicle, as much as $3000 more that for the same vehicle without certification. And another reason for dealers to aggressively market CPOs: they can turn the vehicle more quickly—a CPO vehicles sells in an average of 30 days, five days faster than a comparable non-certified vehicle.

The top brand for CPOs is Toyota, capturing 19.6% of all CPO sales, with over 518,000 vehicles sold last year, up 14% from 2015.

NFL TO GNC: YOU’RE OUT!

We reported last month than GNC was planning to use a Super Bowl spot to kick off a new campaign to re-image its brand, while also revamping and updating store operations. But now the National Football League tossed a big-time penalty flag at the chain—it has vetoed Fox’s sale of a game spot, finding GNC to be an unacceptable advertiser. The problem is that NFL players aren’t allowed to have a business relationship with GNC because it has been “associated with the production, manufacture or distribution of NFL-banned substances.” GNC’s chief marketing officer said the chain does sell some products that contain two substances that are banned by the league (there are more than 100 banned substances). “At 1 o’clock (Monday) we were notified by Fox that the NFL had rejected us, our commercial and rejected us as an advertiser in the Super Bowl,” Jeff Hennion said. “And that was the first we had heard there was any concern with GNC’s participation.”
