LIVING IN A HOUSE
I’ve lived on camps, on sites and sometimes I live in a house. Sometimes I like living in a house. The good thing about it is that you get more space and you can get peace and quiet. You can have more stuff when your in a house because there are more places to put it all. My Daddy has decorated a room up for me and my sister, and we have got our own tv and everything.
In the winter I like it because if you are needing in the middle of the night, you don’t have to go out to the chalet when it’s cold. In the winter it can get boring on the site when it’s dark and there is nothing to do. When you are in a house all your family still keeps coming over to visit you so you don’t lose touch.
My Mam likes us being in the house so that it is easier for her with the wee ones. It’s easier going to school from a house, because you can act just the same as everybody else. My mum thinks it is very important to get an education. Some of my friends don’t go to school, and sometimes I want to just stay off for the day, but my mum always makes me go. Some folk say that you stop being a Traveller because you bide in a house, but there’s no way that you stop being a Traveller.
My Daddy puts up with being in the house in the winter, but as soon as the weather picks up, he starts thinking about going back out in the trailer. My Mam makes him stay on until the school is finished for the summer, and sometimes that makes him crabbit and he says he feels like the walls are closing in on him. Sometimes he’ll go away and work for a bit with the other men, but me and my brothers and sisters stay at the house with our Mam. My brother sometimes gets off school a wee bit early to go away with the men.
Sometimes we try to get a pitch on the local site for the summer, but sometimes we keep the house on and just go travelling about with my Daddy working and visiting all the relations that we haven’t seen for a while. I like it if we can get on a good camp with our cousins.
When I am older I want to get married and stay in a house, but I want to have a big trailer with chocolate box windows
