Literacy and Life skills Facilitator/Lecturer
Batchelor Institute is expanding and strengthening its commitment to providing quality training through implementation and development of Foundational Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Employability (FLNNE) skills within the adult community at Wadeye.
As well as delivering VET Certificate 1 and 11 programs to the Wadeye adult community, Batchelor Institute has recently been awarded the contract to deliver the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) project in Wadeye and nearby communities.
The ideal applicant will have a TAE Certificate as well as skills, experience and qualifications in teaching Literacy and Numeracy and particularly embedding these skills within VET programs, including Conservation Land Management, Construction, Horticulture or similar employment related courses.
We are looking for expressions of interest from a highly motivated, committed person who has skills and experience in working with and engaging Indigenous communities and particularly youth, with innovative approaches to facilitating groups.
This position will be based in Wadeye.

This position will operate closely with the Community Training Coordinator at Wadeye.
ROLE OVERVIEW
This position will play a critical role in contributing to the development of Foundation Language Literacy and Numeracy (FLNN) skills within the adult community of Wadeye. The position requires highly innovative approaches to FLNN teaching and learning including engaging with disengaged youth, the use of ICT and social media, and embedding FLLN into other programs and highly developed skills in collaboration with other training and service providers. The ideal applicant will have experience working with and engaging Indigenous communities and have skills or qualifications in disciplines such as the Music, Arts and/or Crafts, and Conservation and Land Management as well as qualifications in teaching Literacy and Numeracy to adult learners. A knowledge of the National Foundation Skill Strategy and familiarity with the Foundational Skills Training Package also important to the role.
KEY ROLE PROFILE OUTCOMES
1. Delivery of a range of FLNN accredited and non accredited programs including Certificate I and II in Education and Skills Development (ESD) Certificate 1 and II Foundation skills through flexible, innovative and IT based strategies.
2. Develop appropriate teaching materials which respond to clients learning needs. In particular, provide specialist technical knowledge and input into the development of workplace English language, literacy and numeracy programs
3. Prepare training plans for a range of programs, application and enrolments forms and associated resources required for the effective and efficient delivery and assessment of courses.
4. Maintain all student and apprentice records as required; report progress of students to the Faculty. This includes documenting assessments of student competency according to the Institute’s Academic Rules and Faculty of Education, Arts and Social Science and national quality standards (AQTF or AUQA).
5. Undertake the basic administrative tasks required of all Batchelor Institute staff in relation to course delivery.
6. Work collaboratively with other Foundation Skills team members to engage in processes of continuous improvement for embedding literacy skills development into learning programs and participate in Faculty / Institute meetings as required
7. Operate as the recognized representative of the Faculty of Education, Arts and Social Sciences in Wadeye. This also involves consulting with the Training coordinator, Thamarrurr Regional Authority Aboriginal Corporation (TRAAC) at Wadeye on issues related to identified training needs.
8. Develop strong relationships with stakeholders and students to support learning and consult and counsel them on academic progress and recommend appropriate action.
9. Maintain personal professional development particularly in the area of foundation skills development.
10. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation as directed.
SELECTION COMPETENCIES
Key selection competencies:
1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to three (3) year’s higher education relevant to educational leadership, teaching, and/or a qualification in TESOL/ESL and / or three (3) years’ experience relevant to this position and minimum of a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE).
2. Demonstrated capacity to engage effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and to communicate effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members.
3. Proven capacity to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others in culturally diverse teams, including team teaching as well as being able to take responsibility for working independently of direct supervision.
4. Demonstrated capacity to develop and teach flexible learning programs with workplace assessment opportunities with limited resources at a community level. This includes embedding foundation and literacy skills development through culturally appropriate programs through a variety of practical resources and a range of media.
5. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills so as to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.
6. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory C class drivers license with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.
7. Demonstrated understanding of equal opportunities, affirmative action and quality assurance (AQTF / AUQA) principles and practices.
8. Willingness to gain competency in TAELLN401A and TAELLN501B
Desirable selection competencies:
1. Qualifications in English as a Second Language or adult language, literacy and numeracy qualifications.
2. Qualifications in Technology, Music, Arts or other discipline as a base for teaching contextualized FLLN
3. Ability to speak an Indigenous language.

The Lecturer B (Certificate I and II in Education and Skills Development (ESD)) will be primarily based at Wadeye and be responsible for the coordination and delivery of literacy and numeracy programs in the Certificate I and II in Education and Skills Development (ESD) courses and the Foundational Skills Training Package. This position requires a deep understanding of literacy learning that has flexible delivery and assessment approaches. Strong collaborative team skills are essential to the position.
