Listed below are the Video Tryout Requirements. Please note that this option is reserved for those who have extenuating circumstances (as approved by the head coach) that prevent them from attending tryouts in-person. The video tryout must be requested by contacting the coaches at . Trying out in-person and learning all of the Truman tryout material is highly preferred.

Please wear a plain white, purple, or black shirt without any school, club, or other logos, along with plain black or purple cheer shorts and plain cheer shoes.

Please email with your completed Tryout Information Form and Informed Consent Form, which can be found on the tryouts tab of our website (cheerleading.truman.edu), along with your video submission. These are due by or prior to April 15, 2015 to allow time in case we encounter any technical difficulties in viewing your submission.

Video Tryout Requirements:

  • INTERVIEW: Please answer the following questions:
  • Why do you like to cheer, and what do you love most about it?
  • Why do you want to cheer for Truman?
  • What will you bring to the squad?
  • STUNTING: (Each stunt included should show how you got into the stunt, sticking it, and dismount. We will assess on difficulty and cleanliness.)
  • Please show your most advanced level of stunting in two group stunts. Examples include (but are not limited to or required): extensions, liberties, full downs, full ups, tick tocks, shoulder stands, and partner stunting. We are also looking for difficulty in getting into the stunt as well as in dismounts. You may show more than two stunts, but please limit it to four.
  • Please show your most advanced stunting ability in at least two positions of the stunt. For example, back spot and base, flyer and base, or back spot and flyer. We are looking for versatility.
  • If you have the ability, please demonstrate your shoulder stand skills.
  • For males, please include your partner stunting abilities (chair, toss hands, liberty, etc.), your shoulder stand abilities, and your group stunting abilities.
  • TUMBLING:
  • Please demonstrate your standing and running tumbling abilities. If you are currently working towards a new skill, you may use a spot.
  • Please do not tumble on a spring floor or tumble track. We do not use or compete on spring floors. In-person tryouts will be conducted on a flex-roll competition floor, and it is best to demonstrate your tumbling on a similar type of floor.
  • SPIRITING AND CHEERING:
  • For males, please demonstrate your crowd-leading ability with or without a megaphone.
  • Please perform two of your home school’s chants or cheers, including your spiriting ability.
  • Please perform your school’s fight song routine.
  • If you have not previously cheered for your school (i.e. all-star cheerleading or competition cheerleading), or your school does not have a fight song dance, please contact for additional directions.
  • JUMPS: Please demonstrate the following jumps:
  • Toe touch
  • Double toe touch
  • Pike
  • One jump of your choice

Your video submission will be evaluated on the same day as in-person tryouts. Feel free to be creative. Ingenuity and creativity are important aspects of our squad! You will be contacted after squad decisions are made if you have made the squad. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Truman State University Cheerleading Coaches
