DERRY AREA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

(established in 1992)

THIS AWARD WILL BE PRESENTED ANNUALLY TO ONE MEMBER OF EACH VARSITY TEAM.

Criteria:

1.Will be presented to a male or female in any grade (9-12).

2.Must exhibit behavior that exemplifies good sportsmanship during the season.

3.Must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

4.Must exhibit good citizenship in both school and community during the school year.

Selection Process:

1.Head coach will make recommendation to the Athletic Director.

2.Head coach will consult with coaching staff, if applicable, before turning in recommendation.

3.Selection will be made at the end of each sports’ season.

Recognition:

1.Each winner's name will be inscribed on a plaque to be displayed in the High School Trophy Case.

2.Each winner will receive an individual certificate.

OUTSTANDING TROJAN ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

(established 1980)

Criteria:

1.Presented to four outstanding seniors.

a.Female who achieved the most in team sports (volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer).

b.Female who achieved the most in individual sports (track, tennis, Cross Country, golf, swimming).

c.Male who achieved the most in team sports (football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball).

d.Male who achieved the most in individual sports (track, golf, cross country, wrestling, swimming).

2.Consideration for team sports will be given for:

$Attitude and overall contribution to the team

$All conference, all-star, all WPIAL, all state, etc.

$Overall participation in all sports

3.Consideration for individual sports will be given for:

$Individual accomplishment in the nominated sport for all years of competition

$Advancement into WPIAL, regional, and PIAA competition

4.Statistics of individual performers (contributions to the team).

Individuals may tie for this award under certain criteria (PIAA Champions, similar outstanding accomplishment).

Selection Process:

1.Each head coach may nominate one or two athletes.

2.A secret ballot will be used. Each coach has one vote. Each head coach will vote for one nominee in each category. Individuals with the greatest number of votes will be declared the awardees.

Recognition:

1.Each of the four winners will receive a plaque at the Annual Awards Assembly.

THREE SPORT VARSITY AWARD

(established in 2003)

Criteria:

Available to any varsity athlete or cheerleader.

Must earn three varsity letters as an athlete during the school year.

Must have completed three seasons of varsity level athletic competition to be eligible.

Selection Process:

The Athletic Director will be responsible for making the selection based on Varsity letter winner report turned in by each sports head coach.

Recognition:

A special plaque will be awarded to the winners.

JUDGE JOHN J. DRISCOLL SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD

(established 1974)

Criteria:

1.Presented to two male or female seniors or 1 male or 1 female senior.

2.Top 20 percent of his/her graduating class.

3.Outstanding scholar with leadership qualities.

4.Excel in varsity sports.

Selection Process:

1.All coaches will nominate one athlete/sport.

2.The Athletic Director and Guidance Department will choose the highest qualified athletes based on information provided by the coaches and records of achievement available in the Guidance office.

3.The principal has final approval of award winners.

Recognition:

1.Attend the Annual Banquet.

2.Receive a plaque or certificate from Judge Driscoll.

JUDGE JOHN J. DRISCOLL SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD

NATIONAL SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD (ARMY)

(established 1978)

Criteria:

1.Presented to two juniors or seniors - one male and one female.

2.Must excel both in academics and in athletics.

Selection Process:

1.The Athletic Director and Guidance Department will choose qualified athletes based on information provided by the coaches and records of achievement available in the Guidance office.

2.The principal has final approval of award winners.

Recognition:

1.A medal will be presented by the U. S. Army at Derry's Annual Awards Assembly.

JIM McBROOM SCHOLAR/ATHLETE MEMORIAL AWARD

(established in 2003)

Two (2) $500 scholarships (one male and one female) will be awarded to applicants who meet the following:

Criteria:

Must be a senior male and female athlete

Must be graduating in the Spring

Must have plans to enter college or a post-educational institution

Must have a 3.0 scholastic average on a four point grading system

Must have competed in a varsity sport in senior year

Must submit a 500 word essay entitled “How My Scholar Athlete Experience Benefitted Me”

Must have displayed good sportsmanship throughout the school year

Scholarships will be awarded upon receipt of official first semester college or post-graduate institute transcript in the Athletic Office.

Selection Process:

Coaches will distribute application to qualified athletes in their sport.

Applications will be returned to Athletic Office.

Award will be judged on academic and athletic achievement

Athletic Director and Guidance Counselor will review applications and choose best male and female applicant.

High School principal will give final approval.

Recognition:

  1. Each recipient will receive a trophy from the McBroom family.
  2. Each recipient will receive $500.00 upon successful completion of one semester at a college or post-graduate institution.

NAVY SCHOLAR / ATHLETE AWARD

(established 2003)

Criteria:

  1. Presented to one senior
  2. Must excel both in academics and in athletics

Selection Process:

The Athletic Director and Guidance Department will choose the best qualified athlete based on GPA and athletic performance.

The principal has final approval of award winner.

Recognition:

(1)A certificate will be presented by a representative of the U.S. Navy at the Annual Awards Assembly.

DISTINGUISHED ATHLETE AWARD - UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

(established 1989)

Criteria:

1.Presented to one male athlete and one female athlete in grades 9 - 12.

2.Student must have represented our school as an athlete sometime during grades 9 - 12.

3.The recipient need not be the most outstanding athlete, rather, one who has best exhibited the unique combination of courage, poise, self-confidence, leadership and athletic ability. This award is to assist you in honoring a deserving and possibly unsung varsity athlete, but more importantly, provides an incentive to those who may be eligible for the award in subsequent years.

Selection Process:

1.The Athletic Department and Guidance Department will make the selections.

Recognition:

1.A certificate will be awarded at Derry's Annual Awards Assembly.

NED CECCHINI MEMORIAL SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD

(established 1995)

Criteria:

1.Senior player.

2.Continuing education beyond high school.

3.Minimum G.P.A. 3.00.

4.Must exhibit good sportsmanship.

5.Demonstrate dedication to the baseball program.

6.Exemplify outstanding citizenship traits both in school and the community.

7.Must demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to cooperate with coaches and teammates.

8.Must exhibit a maximum work ethic - be a "hustler".

9.Must have made a significant athletic contribution to the team effort.

Selection Process:

1.The baseball coaching staff will consult with the high school principal and the Guidance Department and then will make the selection.

Recognition:

1.A permanent plaque will be placed in the high school with the awardee's name engraved annually.

2.A plaque will be presented at the end of the year baseball dinner. From 1995-2010 a stipend of $500.00 was presented to the awardee upon submission of his post high school first semester grades to the high school guidance office. This no longer is part of the award.

DERRY AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL PARENTS

LADY TROJAN AWARD

(established 1990)

Criteria:

1.Senior girl.

2.Dedication to the game.

3.At least a "C" average.

4.Attitude that reflects a positive personality.

Selection Process:

1.Varsity girls basketball coaches make selection based on above qualifications.

Recognition:

1.Plaque will be placed in the school's trophy case.

2.A plaque will be given each year to the senior girl receiving the award.

KIM BELAN MEMORIAL CHEERLEADING AWARD

(established 1983-84 by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Tassone)

3.Senior

4.Most improved

Selection Process:

1.Each member of the cheerleading squad present at the selection meeting will cast one vote. In case of a tie, voting will continue until a winner has been named. A secret ballot will be used.

Recognition:

1.A plaque will be presented to the recipient at the End of Season Meeting.

2.Name of winner engraved on plaque which remains in the school trophy case.

CROSS COUNTRY AWARDS

MOST VALUABLE RUNNER

DERRY TOWNSHIP FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION AWARD

(established 1965)

Criteria:

1.Presented to the most improved senior football player.

2.Must have played during his senior year.

3.Demonstrate the ability to mentally and physically prepare himself during the off season.

4.Make a significant contribution to team.

Selection Process:

1.Entire football coaching staff will meet and discuss candidates on how well athlete prepared himself and how successful the athlete was during the season.

2.Selection made at the end of football season.

3.Method of voting to be established by head coach.

4.One player per year can win a memorial award per team.

Recognition:

1.Plaque presented to recipient at the annual football banquet.

2.Name of winner to be engraved on a plaque which remains in the school.

JACK GULAS MEMORIAL FOOTBALL AWARD

(established 1975)

Criteria:

1.Cooperation with coaches and team

2.Dedication to the game

3.Determination to excel

4.Willingness to sacrifice

5.Attitude that reflects a positive personality

6.Senior football player

Selection Process:

1.The varsity football coaching staff will be responsible for making the selection.

2.One player per year can win a memorial award per team.

Recognition:

1.A plaque or trophy and a check will be presented by a member of the Gulas family to the winner at our Annual Awards Assembly.

2.The name of the recipient will be engraved on a plaque to be displayed permanently in the High School.

SFC. EARL FILLMORE JR. MEMORIAL FOOTBALL AWARD

(established 1993)

FORMERLY - MOST VALUABLE DEFENSIVE PLAYER AWARD

(established 1984-85)

Established in 1985 by a former defensive coordinator of the Trojan Varsity Football Program.

Memorial Award established in 1993 by Fillmore family in memory of former player Sfc. Earl Fillmore, Jr. who died October 3, 1993 in Samolia.

Criteria:

1.Senior or Junior football player.

2.Shows dedication to the overall football program.

3.Most outstanding defensive football player (regardless of defensive position).

Selection Process:

1.The varsity football coaching staff will vote on their choice for the award.

2.One player per year can win a memorial award per team.

Recognition:

1.Plaque presented to the recipient by a member of the family when at all possible or the defensive coordinator. A $50.00 check will accompany this award.

2.Name of winner to be engraved on permanent plaque in school trophy case.

ROBERT KERR MEMORIAL FOOTBALL AWARD

(established in 1960 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kerr)

Criteria:

1.Senior football player.

2.Exemplify outstanding citizenship traits.

3.At least "C" average in school work.

4.Made some meaningful contribution to the football program.

Selection Process:

1.Varsity football coaches nominate.

2.Senior members of the Monogram Club in good standing will cast secret ballots at the first club meeting after receiving nominations.

3.One player per year can win a memorial award.

Recognition:

1.A plaque will be presented to the recipient at the Annual Banquet.

2.Name of winner engraved on trophy which remains in the school trophy case.

TROJAN FOOTBALL TEAM PLAYER AWARD

(established 1983)

Criteria:

1.Displays team concept.

2.Exemplifies self sacrifice for the betterment of the team.

3.Shows dedication to the overall football program.

4.Puts the team above personal goals.

5.Demonstrates the ability to prepare himself mentally and physically during the entire year.

Selection Process:

1.The varsity coaching staff and will make the decision.

Recognition:

1.Plaque presented to recipient by head football coach at Annual Banquet.

2.Name of winner to be engraved on a plaque which remains in the school trophy case.

TROJAN FOOTBALL COACHES AWARD

(established 2000)

Criteria:

1.Senior football player.

2.“C” Average in school.

3.May or may not have played Junior or Sophomore year.

4.Unexpected positive contribution to program on and/or off field.

5.Strives for excellence.

Selection Process:

1.Entire football coaching staff will meet and discuss candidates.

Method of votes established by the head coach.

Recognition:

1.Plaque presented to recipient at the annual football banquet.

2.Name of winner to be engraved on a plaque which remains in the school.

HARRY O. BAUMGARDNER MEMORIAL AWARD

SCHOLASTIC AND GOLFING ACHIEVEMENT

(established 1975)

Criteria:

1.Scholastic -Average at the end of the first semester. (Courses to be excluded are Physical Education and Drivers Education.) Must be "C" average or higher. Rating will be done on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 point system with 5 being the highest. Grades will be obtained from students' permanent record cards.

2.Athletic -Golf average (no handicap) at the end of the regularly scheduled season which will mean after the last regularly scheduled match. Method of evaluation will also be on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 point system with the golfer having the best average getting 5 points, 4 points, etc.

3.Character -Each candidate will be rated by the golf coach in leadership, desire to play, personality, and sportsmanship. A rating of 5 will be given to the person who displays these traits the best, a 4 will be given to the second best, etc.

Selection:

The head coach will then total the points in the three categories. The golfer who has the highest point total will be the awardee for that year.

Recognition:

The recipient will be presented with plaque at the Annual Golf Banquet.

NOTE:If there are only four golfers which qualify for the award, then all evaluating will be done on a four point system. If there are six candidates, the evaluations will be based on a six point system.

MOST VALUABLE GOLFER AWARD

(established 1977)

Criteria:

1.Presented annually to the most valuable golfer.

2.Consideration given to: average scores during course of the season, dedication to the game, improvement shown during season, and match points received during the season.

Selection Process:

1.Golf coach and team members make the selection.

2.Coach is responsible for developing procedures.

Recognition:

1.Plaque presented by golf coach at the Annual Golf Banquet.

DERRY AREA SOFTBALL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD

(established 1995)

Criteria:

1.Presented annually to the Varsity player who has contributed the most to the success of the softball team.

2.Consideration given to: complete offensive and defensive statistics, dedication to the team, leadership qualities, sportsmanship, and all around playing ability.

3.To be eligible, a player must have played in at least 1/2 of the total innings played by the team.

Selection Process:

1.A list of eligible athletes will be compiled by the coaches.

2.Each member of the Varsity Softball Team and the Coaching Staff will cast a vote for the MVP Award following the completion of the season.

Recognition:

1.A plaque will be presented to the winner of the MVP Award at the Annual Softball Banquet.
