Linganore High School

Course Title: Student Service Learning Coordinator: J. Brown

Fall 2016: 18-week Course Outline

Course Description: The course is open for students interested in helping community agencies or in serving as tutors to high school peers or students in middle or elementary schools. Students will have an opportunity to investigate ways in which people in a community help each other, define an area of interest and make a commitment to an agency serving the community, and develop skills necessary to fill commitments. Additionally students will receive training in peer tutoring.

Placements: Students will be assigned to a specific agency, school, or department. Each student will have a specific placement supervisor in addition to the SSL Coordinator. Placements decisions are based on the need at the time and individual student skill. Students are placed in settings that will best utilize their skills and challenge their potential.

Program Expectations: 1. Be present and on time for your placement.

2.  Dress and act mature and responsibly.

3.  Complete and submit all project work in a timely manner.

4.  Respect others’ right to work and learn.

Tutoring: Students in the SSL program will receive training in peer tutoring. Students may be asked to complete tutoring hours assisting other students. You will be responsible for setting goals with your tutoring match and designing a plan to meet those goals. You should be working with any assigned students at least 1 day each week. Most tutoring will take place in room C101. You may work with regularly assigned students as well as “drop-ins”.

Program Project/Volunteer Hours: Each student will identify an appropriate project to complete over the course of the semester. These projects will be designed and implemented using the major steps of service learning: Preparation, Action, and Reflection. More details will be reviewed about the project in the first weeks of school. Some students may choose to complete volunteer hours at a local agency or an extended tutoring plan in place of an individually designed project. There will also be some limited options to take part in an assigned group project.

Late Assignments Policy: Assignments are to be submitted on or before the due date. Late assignments will be awarded one-half credit. Since all written assignments are submitted electronically, all work is expected on the due date regardless of attendance. It is expected that all assignments be submitted in order to receive course credit.

Honor Code: Academic honesty is a cornerstone of the high academic integrity established and expected at Linganore High School. Violations of this code will result in the total loss of credit for the assignment and the recording of a failing grade. It may also entail loss of credit for the course and additional disciplinary action.
