Lincoln College

There are 38 self-governing and independent colleges at Oxford, giving both academics and students the benefits of belonging to a small, interdisciplinary community as well as to a large, internationally-renowned institution. The collegiate system fosters a strong sense of community, bringing together leading academics and students across subjects, and from different cultures and countries.

Lincoln is one of the oldest Oxford Colleges, with fine historic buildings located in the centre of the City. It has a strong sense of collegiality with a reputation for integrating its graduate and undergraduate students in a highly successful community. There are currently 50Fellows in the College, of whom 28 are also College Tutors responsible for teaching and the welfare of students. About 95 undergraduates and 120 graduates in a wide range of subjects are admitted to Lincoln each year and about 600 are in residence at any one time. Further information about the College can be obtained from

PPE at Lincoln College

On average, 9 undergraduates are admitted each year to readPhilosophy, Politics and Economics and 1 or 2 undergraduates for History and Politics, making this one of the larger subject groups in College. In addition to the advertised post there are normally three permanent Tutorial Fellows in the Lincoln College PPE Team, one each in Philosophy, in Politics, and in Economics. Currently there are 16 graduate students in residence following Master and Doctoral programmes in Politics, International Relations, and related fields. Graduate supervision and teaching is provided by University staff.

Duties

The duties of a Tutorial Fellow include teaching, the pursuit of original research, and participation in the governance and administrative work of the College under the By-Laws of the College. The ordinary duties of the post also include pastoral care and supervision of students, submitting reports on individual students at the end of each term, setting and marking collections (termly College tests), and assisting with the annual undergraduate Admissions process in December each year.

Teaching Duties

The successful candidate for this Fellowship will be required to provide 8 hours of tutorial teaching per week averaged across the three 8-week terms of the academic year in the papers for which he or she is responsible. These hours may include some teaching for other colleges, including through exchange arrangements with tutors in other colleges.

As well as teaching courses in his or her area of specialism, the postholder will also be expected to give tutorials for first year introductory courses in Politics and for a selection of advanced courses, including the Core Course in International Relations. Detailed information on all these papers is available from the PPE website:

Tutorials normally involve a tutor and two or three students. Tutorial teaching differs from lecturing or seminar teaching: the key element is advice and guidance on the regular production of written work, usually weekly;assessment and feedback on that written work through regular marking and oral comment; and appropriately directed intellectual interaction and creative dialogue with students. Some element of small group teaching, in the form of revision classes, or undergraduate thesis supervision, may also form part of the normal pattern of teaching.

The Fellow will be expected to mark tutorial work regularly and promptly, to report on students’ progress via the Oxford Colleges’ on-line reporting system (OxCORT); to set and mark College examination papers (Collections) at the beginning of each term; to hold meetings with students at the beginning and end of every term to discuss their programme of work and academic progress;to arrange out-of-college tuition as required; to participate in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise (with interviews in December), to recommend and select books for the College Library, to assist with College Open Days; to assist with the admission of graduate students to the College in Politics, International Relations and related fields.

The Fellow will also be asked to act as an advisor for graduate students in the College, whose supervisors may be located at another College. The College Advisor provides general guidance and pastoral support only and does not provide thesis supervision. A small additional payment is made in respect of such duties.

Duties of Director of Studies for PPE

The Director of Studies (DoS) will be required to assume overall organisational responsibility for PPE within the College and for overseeing the academic welfare of students on the course. The postholder will share responsibility for the care and welfare of the College’s PPE undergraduates with the other Tutors in the subject but will be the first point of contact for undergraduates, will advise them on choices of subjects and options, andorganise meetings with them at the beginning and end of each term to arrange teaching provision and to monitor their academic progress. The DoS is also responsible for coordinating the annual undergraduate admissions exercise for PPE; for liaising with the inter-collegiate PPE committee and keeping colleagues informed of developments in the School; for ensuring representation of the subject at College Open Days and other recruitment and access events and to advise on the content of recruitment literature for the subject.

Tutorial Fellows are expected to engage in research and publication. The College supports these endeavours through provision of sabbatical leave, at the rate of one term’s paid leave in respect of each completed six terms’ service ( subject to the making of satisfactory arrangements for the teaching of their students) and through financial support.
