INTEGER RULES

ADDITION

Like signs - add numbers; answer is same sign 6 + 5 = 11 -6 + -5 = -11

Unlike signs – subtract numbers; answer is same sign as larger number –7 + 4 = -3 4 + -10 = -6

SUBTRACTION

“Keep it, Change it, Change it”Then use addition rules to solve: -6 - -8 KCC -6 + 8 = 2

MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION

Multiplication and division use the same rules:

Like signs positive: -3  -2 = 6 = 6 Unlike signs negative -4  7 = -28 = -7

MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION

Multiplication and division use the same rules:

Like signs positive: -3  -2 = 6 = 6 Unlike signs negative -4  7 = -28 = -7

MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION

Multiplication and division use the same rules:

Like signs positive: -3  -2 = 6 = 6 Unlike signs negative -4  7 = -28 = -7

INTEGER RULES

ADDITION

  • Like signs - add the numbers and use the same sign as both numbers

Ex. 6 + 5 = 11-6 + -5 = -11

  • Unlike signs – subtract the numbers and use the same sign as the larger number

Ex. –7 + 4 = -34 + -10 = -6

SUBTRACTION

  • The phrase you want to keep in your head is “Keep it, Change it, Change it”

You keep the first sign, change the – to a +, and change the sign of the last integer. Then use addition rules to solve. Here are some examples:

-6 - -89 – 2-7 - 4

-6 + 8 = 29 + -2 = 7-7 + -4 = -11

MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION

  • Multiplication and division use the same rules:
  • Like signs positive: 9  3 = 27 -3  -2 = 6= 5= 6
  • Unlike signs negative -4  7 = -288  -2 = -16 = -7= -6

INTEGER RULES
