LIGHTING FIXTURES AND LAMPS

1. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. All light fixtures installed in classrooms and other instructional areas shall have been those approved for use in such areas by the Florida Department of Education in accordance with the Rules of Florida State Board of Education for Educational Facilities, Chapter 6A-2.65.

B. Each lighting fixture specified shall be tested and certified for proper operation by the manufacturer for the type ceiling and mounting on or in which it is to be installed.

C. Lighting fixtures shall be UL listed and labeled where applicable.

D. The Project Architect/Engineer's Drawings shall include reflected ceiling plans, lighting fixture layouts and details of the proposed lighting fixtures to be utilized. The Drawings and Specifications shall include dimensions, lamp type, cost per lamp, and competitive manufacturers for fixture and lamp.

E. Emergency egress lighting installations and power source connections shall meet all requirements of the National Electrical Code, Article 700 and the Department of Education Rule 6A-2.059 and 6A-2.061(8).

F. All emergency lighting units shall be hard-wired connections. Cord or cord-cap connections are not acceptable.

G. When emergency lighting is provided through the general lighting fixtures(s), the design shall permit all fixtures to be "turned-off" from the local room control, but with the capability for the fixture utilized for emergency egress to automatically and positively transfer to secondary power sources for emergency operation when normal power is lost to that area. The design shall include all necessary relays and contactors to accomplish this transfer of power sources.

H. Exit lighting installations and power source connections shall meet all requirements of the National Electrical Code, Article 700 and the Department of Education Rule 6A-2.060 and 6A-2.061(8).

I. Exit lighting shall be designed without local switching control, excluding the necessary overcurrent protection.

J. All instructional spaces shall be designed with the ability to reduce lighting levels in accordance with Department of Education Rule 6A-2.065(8)(B)(1).

K. All lighting utilized for walkways, parking lots, accents and exteriors shall have the capability of being turned off by means other than circuit breakers.

2. MATERIALS

A. BALLASTS

1. Ballasts specified for fluorescent fixtures shall be CBM and UL approved, with a "P" rating.

2. Ballasts shall have non - PCB capacitors and an "A" sound rating with a high power factor.

3. Ballasts shall be internally protected with an automatic reset thermal protector.

4. Ballasts shall be provided with in-line fusing to prevent the loss of a lighting branch circuit if a ballast faults to ground.

5. Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium ballasts shall be constant wattage high power factor type.

B. LAMPS

1. Incandescent lamps shall be inside frosted rated at 120 volts with a minimum life of 1,000 hours.

2. Fluorescent lamps shall be GE Staybright XL (F40/SXL/SP35, Phillips Advantage X (F40/35U) or Panasonic F40EX50(T-10) series that have energy saving, preheat rapid start rated for a minimum life of 24,000 hours at three hours per start, and are warranted for 3 years at a minimum of 3400 lumens.

3. Fluorescent lamps shall be specified as warm-white unless special applications are necessary.

4. Metal Halide lamps shall have a minimum rated life of 10,000 hours.

5. High Pressure Sodium lamps shall have a minimum rated life of 24,000 hours.

3. EXECUTION

A. Lighting fixtures shall be supported directly from the building structure, and not merely from the ceiling system.

B. Fluorescent fixtures used in a lay-in ceiling shall be supported directly to the building structure from all four (4) corners (independently from the ceiling grid) with minimum wire size of No. 12 AWG, galvanized solid wire.

C. Wiring splices or taps are not to be located within an arm, stem, etc. used for support. All runs should be continuous from outlet box to lamp socket or ballast terminals.

D. Provisions shall be made so all lamps are working at the time of final acceptance. Defective lamps shall be replaced.

E. Fixtures shall be supported, as a minimum, in compliance with the details which are on pages 16-O (4) through (26).
