The Whispers come through Rochester, N.Y.

The Whispers come through Rochester, N.Y. about twice a year and still put on a heck of a show with lots of energy. The Scott twins sing as well as ever.

They always close the show with about an hour and 15 minute performance. Opening acts have included the Delfonics, Stylistics, Manhattans, Dramatics, Enchantment and the Floaters. None of the other groups come close to the professionalism of the Whispers. Danny

The Prisonaires were actually confined to Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. The group was founded by tenor Ed Thurmond in 1940, and Johnny Bragg became the lead singer in 1943. Bragg formed the recorded line-up in 1951 with himself as lead, John Drue and Thurmon as tenors, William Stewart, baritone and guitar, and Marcell Sanders sang bass. The warden arranged for them to record, and their first release is their most famous, a song that Bragg co-wrote and that Johnny Ray put high on the pop charts, "Just Walkin' In The Rain". The group recorded this in 1953. They recorded a total of four singles for Sun Records in 1953 and 1954. They were paroled in 1955, thanks to Governor Frank Clement. Bragg was the last to get out (1956) and he became the lead singer of the Marigolds. Some of the other members became part of the Sunbeams.Bragg did return to prison for parole violation, finally being released for good in the '60's. Hope this information helps.

Zydeco Music Q&A

QUESTION: Why is Zydeco music found in most record stores in the "world

music" section, when it's origins are as American as apple pie?

Good question, Bob. Why is that so. Usually down here zydeco and Cajun music have their very own small sections in record companies but I have seen those recordings in World music sections.

Hey, I live 45 minutes from Lake Charles and two hours from Houston, so I have the best of the partying blood in me. Our family parties don't never end on the weekends and we have to dry out Sunday afternoon to make it to work on Monday. What's that song by Bobby Blue Bland about Mondays, Y'all know Latimore sung it also. Stormy Monday, that's it. Anyway that describes my family's parties afterwards.

We've been known to BBQ Friday evening drink, eat that and then commence to drinking and playing music and reminiscing nonstop, maybe a nap in between until Sunday evening.

We've all slowed down quite a bit, but last weekend we did it, sending my 18-year-old daughter, Andrea off in old-fashioned style. She joined the Army and is stationed in South Carolina. She left last Monday. That Friday evening, she got me started, asking me "Momma, you want me to play some Aretha." I smiled, she smiled and it was on like donky kong.

Note: Hey Sig, (my sister in Houston.) You missed a good one. But Emma and I partied for you like we always do. Burned the BBQ but we drank that Paul Masson like it was water.

Oh Bob you got me rambling again. Sorry for the long post.

Amelia Feathers, the other A.F.

Temptations Revue

My 15-year-old daughter and I saw the Temptation Revue featuring Dennis Edwards on June 1, 2001 here Stanislaus State College in Turlock California. They were in fine form, dressed out like Temptations in pink satin suits with wine colored shirts, dancing in unison, and keeping the sound of the music real in true Temptation form. My daughter was rocking in the aisle! The Revue brought back many memories and Dennis Edwards does a great job. To sum it up, it was worth the trip. Count Jeffrey Osbourne a bonus to this energetic performance.

The opening act we saw was a local R&B group, Earl 'Rockin' Brown and his son David, both baaaaaaad (oh yeah!!!) sax players....My advice is to go and enjoy!

Judi

Kim Weston.

Yes, Kim Weston was my favorite Motown female vocalist in the 60s. I liked her better than Mary Wells. I really started listening to music in 1965 which of course was Motown and was the omnipresent Holland Dozier Holland sound. The first cut I heard by Kim was the H-D-H penned and produced, "Take me in your arms' which was a hot dance number back in the day! She followed that up with "Helpless" which was also done by H-D-H. Although, these were good tracks (they had to pass Motown's stiff Quality Control meetings) these didn't crossover to pop as everything else had by H-D-H.

So, the Gordy album that had been recorded was shelved (back then albums were single driven) but was released in 1991 on a Motown Kim Weston compilation. If you are a true Kim fan, this is a must have!

Kim tried one more time with Marvin Gaye with "It takes two" in late 1966.

It went to #14 Pop but by then Kim's hubby, Mickey Stevenson, felt that she wasn't where she should be so they left Motown and that's how the lovely Tammi Terell became Marvin's duet partner until her death.

BTW, if you go to Orlando, check out the Motown Cafe and you'll see actual gowns worn by Kim & Tammi from the old Motortown Revue days. They were some tiny women!

Peace Keith

Amos Milburn

I was reading a post about Texas bluesmen. I love Amos Milburn's work, especially on Aladdin Records. "Bad, Bad Whiskey," "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer," "Chicken Shack Boogie," "Let's Rock A While," "Vicious Vicious Vodka" are some of my all time favorites. In fact "Chicken Shack Boogie" was number on the billboard black charts.

Amos Milburn, Wynonie Harris ("All She Wants to Do Is Rock", "Good Rocking Tonight"), and Roy Brown ("Good Rocking Tonight", "I Want My Fanny Brown") are almost forgotten bluesmen by blacks. But the Bandits know all about them.

No those men didn't play the guitar or harmonica. They recorded tons of Blues and early Rhythm & Blues. Their voices could be like raw heavenly angels, but their records were about booze and sex, in good fun. I love it!

Buy their records!
