INFORMATION FOR NEW APPLICANTS

Thank you for your interest in applying to become a staff member or volunteer on a LIFEbeat Summer Camp. We hope this information will be useful.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. All LIFEbeat camp staff must have attended a LIFEbeat 'Creative Practice' weekend training.
  2. If you are interested in applying to work as a member of camp staff, you will need to complete this application form.
  3. All applications will be considered against LIFEbeat’s mission which is to create a diverse, multi-cultural, intergenerational staff for each camp that reflects the needs of our youth, and which also supplies a comprehensive offer of creative and mentoring skills.
  4. All applicants will receive a response, and successful applicants will receive a staff agreement letter (contract) to complete and return to LIFEbeat.
  5. All successful first-time applicants will need to complete an Enhanced DBS Check. LIFEbeat processes its own checks for all new staff, and all offers are conditional until we receive the result back from the DBS.

CAMP OVERVIEW

LIFEbeat’s residential summer camps are for 14-18 year olds. The camps employ an innovative, holistic model of youth empowerment based around creative expression and the arts. Around 50 young people work together with around 25 adult staff and volunteers to form a ‘creative community’ for the week. We aim to unleash the positive potential of young people through creativity-based, multicultural and intergenerational programmes that foster self-awareness and emotional intelligence; that build community and develop leadership skills; that inspire young people to go out and make a difference.

Schedule (9 days total for Stanford Hall Camps, 10 for Embercombe Camps):

  • Day 0 - Staff day: staff briefing and camp set up
  • Day 1 - Youth arrive: registration, settle into campgrounds, community building
  • Day 2-7 (inclusive) - Camp programme
  • Day 8 - Youth leave (lunchtime): clear up, evening (and overnight stay) for staff closing, relaxation and staff party (optional)

What to expect:

  1. Adult staff are accommodated indoors in shared rooms/yurts. Youth camp out in separate boys / girls campsites, staffed by 2 staff members each night on rotation.
  2. All meals are provided
  3. Details of transport arrangements will be circulated with pre-camp briefing material
  4. All staff will receive a comprehensive Staff Manual prior to camp.

JOINING THE STAFF TEAM

LIFEbeat is an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ type of experience. Everyone works together to build a creative learning community and to take responsibility for things working well. We ask the staff to participate fully in all of the group activities and help move along the flow of the day. It is possible for staff to work on more than one camp during a season.

Camp Leadership- The camp is led by the Camp Directorwho has overall responsibility for the wellbeing of both the staff and youth, the smooth running of the programme according to our Child Protection and Health Safety Policies and ensures that the programme follows LIFEbeat principles. Each camp has two Lead Facilitators who are equally responsible for planning and delivering the programme and ensuring the effective flow of the weekand reporting to the Camp Director. They oversee facilitation of whole group sessions and hold the community space. The Camp Director and Lead Facilitators are supported by a Camp Project Manager who oversees all of the operations of the programme including logistics, registration, food, supplies, travel, staff rotas and timetabling and is the first line of contact for staff support during camp. The remaining team falls into two groups:

Paid Staff Roles –There are a number of specified paid roles on the camp staff. These are specialist LIFEbeat practitioners who offer workshops in their area of expertise, lead parts of the core programme (e.g. evening activities), and support other staff in their workshop offerings. They also act as mentors to the youth along with the rest of the staff.

Volunteers –They participate in all aspects of the camp including workshops and all whole group activities, and are also invited to lead or co-lead workshops if they have a particular area of expertise. They act as mentors to the youth along with the rest of the staff. Sometimes Youth Returnees (who are aged 20+ and have taken at least one year out from the programme) may join the camp as volunteers.

Family Groups - All staff members will be part of a family group. The typical family group has 4-6 youth and 2-3 adults that meet once or more each day (usually after dinner) for reflection. For many participants and staff the family group is the heart of LIFEbeat. In family groups you get to have a deeper experience with a small group of youth and to learn to work together as a team.

Logistics - We expect all staff to jump in and help with logistics when needed, and take turns with various supervisory and housekeeping duties. These include:

  • Night duty - 2 members of staff (2M/2F) overnight duty in each youth camp (one night per person per camp)
  • Supervise communal meal washing up duty (one whole day per family group per camp)
  • Assist with setting up / clearing camp activities

Staff Manual - This detailed document provides essential background to the camp model and processes, and is required reading for all staff. It will be circulated prior to the camp briefing day in London.

If you have any questions at all about joining the staff team at LIFEbeat Summer Camps, please contact Ana Pascual on07557 349 005.
