LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT PSYCH 215/Woodman

ASSIGNMENT SHEET

The purpose for having assignments is to demonstrate to your instructor that you have mastered the required material for the course. Every student has the potential to earn an A grade. To achieve a passing grade of C or better, students must make every effort to attend all the classes offered in this course, and complete all the required assignments described below.

You may submit your assignments in any one of these formats: (l) as hard copies using a colored folder with your name on it, (2) as an attachment via email to Dr. Woodman, (3) as an audio version via computer or on a disc or tape. All assignments that are typed must be formatted to college standards including proper heading, grammar and spelling.

STUDY PLAN SUGGESTIONS

(1) Read the introduction and summary of each chapter first. (2) Skim the chapter and highlight the key ideas. (3) Read the chapter and take notes on what seems meaningful to you. You may work in partners or small groups on any of the nineteen chapter assignments.

EXPLANATION OF ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment #1: Entry Form. Fill out the green form as explained by your instructor on the first day of class. Type an answer to the short essay question. Read and sign the commitment form on the back. Use the correct college heading, check grammar and spelling. (20 grade points)

Assignment #2: Chapter Assignments. This is the most comprehensive assignment in the course. Sometimes chapter assignments will be completed in class to help reduce the amount of homework. You will hand in one chapter ahead of time so you will know if you are completing this assignment to your potential. It will be graded and handed back immediately. Then submit chapters 1-10 and 11-19 in a packet on the due date. For each chapter in Lifespan Development, you will show evidence of having read the text by completing the following two tasks:

1.  List in complete sentences ten main ideas from the chapter. Do not include statistics. Select concepts that have meaning for you, ideas that seem most valuable for your personal and professional life. Consider information that can be used in a practical way in everyday life.

2.  Write a short journal entry of your personal reflections (1/2 page). Feel free to critique the text as well as reflect on your own feelings about what you are learning.

(19 chapters x 20 pts = 380 grade points)

Assignment #3: Final Exam. The Final Exam and tests your ability to apply what you learned to real life situations. It specifically addresses the Learning Objectives of the course. It is open book, open notes and due by the end of the term. The Final Exam will be graded and discussed on the last day of class. If you do not show up on the last day (except for emergency) 25 points will be deducted from the total score. (300 grade points)

Assignment #4: Participation. The teaching style and approach in this course is interactive education. Attendance and active participation in classroom activities is strongly encouraged and will be rewarded with 300 grade points, nearly 1/3 of your total grade. 15 points per class will be awarded for those who respectfully show up on time, actively engage in the class, and stay until the end of the period. As part of classroom interaction, each student will share something inspirational for 3-5 minutes. This can be a short video clip, story, news article, poem or music pertaining to the subject matter in this course.

If a student is late or leaves early, he or she must deduct one point from the total. Absence calls for a deduction of 15 points. No cell phone use or food is allowed in class at anytime! If students must use cell phone or eat do so outside of the classroom during break!

(20 Classes x 15 =300 grade points)

Extra Credit. To promote creativity and personal choice, up to 100 grade points may be earned for extra credit projects. Students are to consider extra credit projects that specifically relate to their career choice. Prior approval by instructor required. Consult the faculty RCC webpage for ideas. Bonus extra credit points will be awarded periodically in class throughout the semester to test prior reading of each chapter in this course.

Upgrades: If any student receives a lower grade and wishes to upgrade it to a higher one, he or she must correct all the suggestions Dr. Woodman gives on the assignment that has been handed in. A higher grade will be awarded accordingly. Upgrades must be handed in within one week of when the assignment was due.

Due Dates: Assignments are due on the date given. However, you will have a one week grace period to allow for life circumstances. After that, NO credit will be given for any late assignment. You may hand in any assignment early if you choose to.
