Syllabus for 2015 – 2016

Teacher: Mrs. Skulina

Overall Goals for the Course: Students will gain a basic understanding of living organisms through the study of Life Science Standards of Learning.

1.Class Requirements: Students are required to follow classroom rules and be prepared with supplies for learning each day. Students are expected to participate and be engaged in order to maximize their learning.

Materials:

  • Binder–Bring your life science binder to class every day.
  • Loose-leaf paper – Keep a small amount of paper in your binder.
  • Pencils – Always have a pencil. Sharpen it before class begins.
  • Four pocket folders – Mrs. Skulina will keep these for you.
  • Glue stick – You will need this from time to time.

Rules:

  • Raise your hand
  • Be on time, in your seat, and ready to work when class begins
  • Complete assignments on time
  • Follow directions

Grades will be calculated as follows:

Classwork 1/3

Quizzes 1/3

Tests 1/3

Students can expect several quizzes and a test for each unit that we complete. Classwork assignments that are not completed in class will be assigned as homework. Homework is due the day after it is assigned and will supplement what we do in the classroom.

All work is to be completed on time. Ten points will be deducted for an assignment turned in one day late. 20 points will be deducted from an assignment turned in two or more days late.

  1. Class Routines

Students will begin class by filling in the agenda with homework. Mrs. Skulina will initial the agenda each day. Tests and quizzes will be announced in advance and will be recorded in the agenda.

Students will then complete a warm-up activity on the Smart Board that is a review of current material.

Class activities may include discussions with note taking, labs or interactive Smart Board reviews.

Daily homework will be to study notes for the current unit to prepare for upcoming quizzes and tests. Parents can help by asking questions from the notes after they have been studied. Any assignments not completed in class will be assigned as homework.

  1. Absences and Make-up Work

It is the responsibility of the student to ask for make-up work the day he or she returns to school. If you are absent, check Mrs. Skulina’s homework page ( to see if there is something you can do at home to keep up with the class. Mrs. Skulina will keep all assignments missed on her desk for the student.

Make-up work should be completed and turned in by the next school day after returning to school. A maximum of five days will be given to turn in make-up work.
