MAIN AIMS OF THE POST

At Kisiizi Hospital we expect care of patients to be of the highest achievable standard at an affordable cost. Kisiizi is committed to continuous improvement in standards and to continuous learning for all staff and the hospital as a whole.

The clinical staff cannot achieve these aims without the essential support of everyone else who works at the hospital. Good stewardship of our financial resources is essential to help us provide quality clinical services to our very poor population. As Accountant you will play an important role in the successful running of Kisiizi’s various ministries.

You will support the Finance Manager in the operation financial transactions relating to Kisiizi’s ministries including the Hospital, Community programmes, Insurance Scheme, School of Nursing, Primary School, Orphan Programme, Tourism project and capital development programs such as new buildings.

IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS

The role requires you to maintain effective working relationships with a very wide range of hospital staff, suppliers and stakeholders.

THE DUTIES OF THE POST

PROFESSIONAL

As a senior member of Kisiizi staff you have professional duties as follows.

  1. You will make the care and safety of patients your first concern and act to protect them from risk.
  2. You will do everything within your power to achieve the aims of the Kisiizi Hospital Mission Statement and to be committed to continuing improvement in standards. You will lead, motivate and encourage your junior staff and be a role model for them.
  3. You must respect the views of patients, relatives, other staff and the public.
  4. You will promote teamwork and a ‘can do’ approach for finding solutions to problems.
  5. You must ensure that information about patients remains confidential.
  6. You will give other information promptly to anyone entitled to receive it about your work and those whom you manage and your plans for the future.
  7. You must ensure there are good channels of communication between you and those you manage.
  8. You must be honest and act with integrity.
  9. You will safeguard the money and resources of the hospital and deploy the resources available to you in an efficient, effective and timely manner to achieve the best value for money.
  10. You accept responsibility for your own work and for the performance of the junior staff in the department.
  11. You must ensure that patients and staff are protected from discrimination. You will ensure that favouritism has no place in relations with your staff.
  12. You will support the Finance Manager to investigate complaints, accidents and errors in your area of work promptly, fairly and thoroughly and take action to improve working arrangements and, when appropriate, arrange training/retraining to prevent errors from happening again.
  13. You must ensure staff have a safe working environment and know the steps they should take to protect themselves from danger. This includes the security of the Accounts Office.
  14. You are responsible for your own professional development.

MANAGERIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE

You will liaise with the Finance Manager in the following:

  1. Daily control of cash and records of all financial transactions.
  2. Managing Kisiizi bank accounts.
  3. Maintaining the computerised accounting system ensuring accuracy and that data is up to date.
  4. Control of salary payments.
  5. Day to day management of the accounts staff.
  6. Production of income and expenditure reports for projects and other activities.
  7. Preparation of annual accounts for the Auditors in accordance with International Standards of Auditing.
  8. To deputise for the finance manager as required.
  9. Implementation of Management Committee decisions in reponse to recommendations from the external auditors
  10. Ensuring appropriate reporting and feedback to partners and donors

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

You are expected to participate in continuing professional development.

Your job appraisal will be done with the Finance Manager.
