Assignment

As a vehicle to illustrate that you understand and are able to apply the concepts we have learned concerning human deception, you will need to watch an episode of “Lie to Me,” on FOX-TV, Wednesdays at 9:00 PM; and you will subsequently write a paper demonstrating your knowledge and awareness. This provides a way for you to analyze others’ behaviors to see how the dynamics of interpersonal communication work.

Assignment Prompts

Since this requirement is to apply the characters and relationships in the movie to concepts and term we have discussed in class, I suggest you take notes while watching the show as you will need to support your claims. Recording the show may be necessary. The following are the Do’s and Don’ts of the assignment.

DO identify as many examples of instances of “deception detection” as possible that applies to the characters and relationships, both verbal and non-verbal.

DO provide examples from the movie that support your references. So, reference a term, apply it to the character(s) and then support it with an example from the movie.

DON’T relay a synopsis of the show; this is not the objective of the assignment. I don’t need to read a timeline of the incidents; remember, I try to watch the show also!

DON’T copy and paste information about the show from the Internet. First, you will not fulfill the assignment, and second, you will be guilty of plagiarism and will suffer the consequences under the school’s policy. Believe me, it is not worth it.

DON’T turn this in late. You will lose 10 points for each day the assignment is late. If necessary, email your assignment to my personal address, but be sure you follow the prescribed format.

Prescribed Format

The paper should be AT LEAST 3 pages long, double spaced, 12 pt type, standard margins. Microsoft Word is preferred. This should be in the form of an essay, not bullet points.

NO handwritten papers will be accepted.

There is no magical or fixed number of how many references you may find, just keep in mind that there are MANY that can be applied to the program.

You MUST identify the episode that you examined; including the title and time and date of air. Again, recording the episode would be of great assistance to you.
