AUTUMN NEWS LETTER October 2006

Dear Member

In recent newsletters we have discussed the future of the Club and in particular from the point of view of support, finance, and the future running of the Club, suggested that things must change with emphasis being placed on those activities that are still successful. Following the Spring Newsletter those members who replied gave us their support.

Sadly in spite of the efforts of Chris Cooper to organise the two sides the annual Cricket match against the school was never played, so that the annual reunion service was the only event to take place during Old Edwardians weekend thus justifying our thoughts in this direction.

As the school effectively no longer plays cricket and certainly plays no senior matches against other schools even though we hoped the cricket playing members of the school might be able to put together a side themselves as indicated above this was not to be, and so for next year while we have pencilled in 29th June to 2nd July to be Old Eds weekend the service will be the only activity and we have to make a decision whether it should continue. We hope things might change but we are not that optimistic.

AGM 26th June

Once again the existing committee and officers were re-elected on block, with Peter Robinson continuing as President, so we carry on for another year. The school senior five have joined our committee along with Sue Dyson as staff representative, Their input is invaluable and we hope that in time the “young uns” will take over from us “old uns”

Treasure Hunt 6th July

This was Arnold Matthews last treasure hunt and as always was as tricky and enjoyable as in the past, finishing at the Meynall Ingram Arms at Hoar Cross where all enjoyed an excellent meal. We thank Arnold most sincerely for his efforts over the past years and look forward to next year’s event to be organised by Richard Davies.

Barbecue 17th August

Held this year at the Duke of Wellington on the evening the A and AS Level results were published the barbecue has become an official event in the school calendar. This year more students than ever before attended a most successful evening. Once again our thanks go to Sue Dyson our staff representative for organising the sale of tickets in school, and to those committee members who helped on the night.

Future Activities

Presidents Dinner 4th November

The Presidents Dinner will this year be held at the Rainbow Thai restaurant located the corner of Bird and Sandford Street’s. The school senior five have been invited to join us, and any member wishing to attend will be most welcome. We intend to arrange a fixed price meal covering a range of Thai specialities. Always a good night and a chance to meet current students, please contact John or myself if you are interested.

Remembrance Service 10th November

On Friday 10th November our annual service of remembrance will be held in Bader Hall at 9.00a.m. All Old Edwardians are welcome and are invited to attend, we will meet in the Headteachers study at 8.45 a.m. It would be helpful for the school if you could telephone John or myself confirming your attendance.

Quiz 7th February

The Quiz will take place in the Lounge at the Bald Buck, Greenhill, Lichfield on Wednesday 7th February starting at 7.30 p.m. Always an enjoyable evening with as many as 12 to 14 teams present, questions are organised by Mike Bowen and the music by Sue Dyson, so please bring a team along.

Matches v The School

The Rugby and Netball will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 27th March 2007 with the school entertaining us to tea after the matches. As always Old Edwardians are most welcome, the matches commence 2.30 p.m We were well beaten in the rugby this year but most of the schools team will now be playing for us so we hope for a much better result.

School Specialist Status

We had learnt from Sue Dyson that the school governors have approved an application for the school to apply for specialist status, so we have included a letter Kevin Maycock Headteacher about the subject and how members can assist.

E- Mail

Arnold Matthews would be pleased to receive an e-mail from you confirming that you would like to be sent our circulars this way, he can be contacted on

Pavilion

No decision has been made regarding the rebuilding, but we were pleased to learn that two brass plaques were recovered.

Arnold Matthews

I think we should also mention the fact that Arnold Matthews was President of the Club in 1966,and has been a member of the committee ever since, his fortieth anniversary

Old Eds/PTA

The PTA has again invited members to join them at their forthcoming events. There will be a Hair and Beauty evening Tuesday 14 November, a Christmas Continental Market on Friday 24th November from 6.30 to 8pm, and the very successful Burns Night and Ceilidh will take place in Bader Hall on Saturday 20th January, if you are interested please contact John Ellithorne. The final event will be a Jazz Evening with the KES band on 17th March.

Best wishes to you all

Yours sincerely
