Library Assistant 1 – Permanent Wholetime Post

The Institute are looking to appoint a person to this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The appointee may be assigned to any of a very wide range of areas or activities carried out in an Institute Library, in any of its campuses.

The duties may be of a clerical nature such as filing, shelving, photocopying, circulation, enquiries, the preparation and input of material on computers. The appointee would be expected to make decisions within limits and clearly defined guidelines. Alternatively, the job could involve the provision of secretarial services for the Library or to a senior staff member including typing and audio-typing and involving access to and processing of data and other types of information.

The job will involve regular contacts with students, staff, the public and organisations and individuals at all levels where discretion, tact, courtesy and judgement would have to be constantly exercised. The jobholder would be expected to exercise a good degree of initiative and be capable of working under a reasonable level of supervision.

All jobs in the Library demand a good knowledge and skill in the use of Information and Communication Technologies and appointees will be expected to use new techniques and technologies as they arise. The Institute will provide the necessary training as appropriate.

Following appointment the appointee will be assigned to a particular location and post –institutes may operate a number of different locations in addition to the main campus. On assignment to the post, the Institute will provide a list of duties and responsibilities applicable to the post.

Library Assistant 1 ( Grade III) – minimum essential qualifications and experience:

Applicants must;

  • have obtained at least Grade D3 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher, ordinary, applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent including English or English / Communications or Irish (certain posts may require the appointee to have Irish or have a competence in oral Irish to the satisfaction of the Institute) and one of the following – Mathematics, Accounting, Business Organisation or Economics or other mathematics or business related subject; OR
  • have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the NQAI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable or higher standard to include NCVA / FETAC and NCEA / HETAC qualifications or equivalent; OR
  • have at least two years previous service in a clerical or administrative post in education, local authority, health board or similar public service organisation (including all organisations covered by the Common Recruitment Pool); OR
  • have appropriate relevant experience which encompasses equivalent skills and expertise.

Salary Scale: starts at €22,893

PLEASE NOTE: Starting salary is not at the discretion of the Institute but is in line with current Government pay policy. It is current Government policy that persons entering this recruitment grade for the first time will start at the minimum point of the salary scale ie €22, 893 regardless of previous experience

Hours of Work

There is an attendance requirement of 37 hours per week (net of rest breaks) . This will include late nights and Saturdays during semester. Clocking in is a requirement. Annual Leave entitlement is 22 days per annum.

Citizenship / Permit Requirement:

Eligibility to compete is open to candidates who are citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Pensions

The appointee will become a member of the appropriate public service pension scheme. Broadly, if the appointee:

(a) served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on 31 December 2012, then the terms of the Education Sector Superannuation Scheme shall apply to the appointee; or

(b) first serves in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on or after 1 January 2013 or has not, prior to appointment, served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant, then the provisions of the Public Service Pensions Single Scheme will apply.

As the rules relating to membership of these schemes contain a number of exceptions, if the appointee has any queries as to which pension scheme provisions apply to them, these should be raised as soon as practicable after appointment with the HR Manager. The appointee shall be obliged to make pension contributions in accordance with the rules of the applicable scheme and the appointee shall be subject to the applicable scheme’s provisions as amended from time to time.
