Title: Explorer Podcasts

Grade: 5th

Level: Resource and GATE

Subject Area/Topic: Social Studies/ Explorers

Objectives: Learners will research an explorer with a group of other learners. Learners will create a podcast in Garage Band with the information they find.

Materials/Resources: Nettrekker, Wikipedia, LRC materials (books on explorers), Garage Band, iTunes

Lesson/Project Description: Students will be put in a group of four. The students will collectively research an assigned explorer. Students will use a list of questions to guide their research. Then students will write a script using their research to tell others about their explorer. Students will record their script in a new podcast using Garage Band and will be able to add pictures and music to their podcast.

Assessment: Students will be graded on performance, group participation, and information.

Comments:When students were finished creating their podcasts in Garage Band, I then exported their previewed projects to iTunes. I then posted their podcasts to my website.

Describe the life of the explorer.

When and where was the explorer born? (This isn't always known.)

When and where did the explorer die?

Were the parents wealthy or poor?

Did other interesting things happen during the life of this explorer?

Did the explorer publish autobiographical information?
