LEVEL:Basic, Intermediate, Advanced

METHOD:Quadrat

APPROACH:Specialist

Lay a 50m transect parallel to shoreline

Generate 4 random numbers

05 45192318

10 09051850

32 13321903

3916031738

Set 1 quadrat at each of the 4+ randomly generated locations along the transect

Assign each student an important role:

Principle Investigator(4+)

The PI will stay with the quadrat throughout

The PI is responsible for the Vital Signs datasheet (on iBook or clipboard)

The PI makes sure that all data fields are completed as each specialist visits the quadrat

The PI helps visiting specialists – especially the botanists – complete their tasks

Photographer (4+)

The Photographer will stay with the quadrat throughout

The Photographer is responsible for the camera and colored ruler

The Photographer photographs the site and method, and helps write these photo captions

The Photographer photographs species (as instructed by the Botanist), and helps write the species photo captions

Geographer (1)

The Geographer will travel from one quadrat to the next with the GPS

The Geographer writes the site description.

The Geographer makes sure the PI writes down the site name and latitude and longitude

Meteorologist (1)

The Meteorologist will travel from one quadrat to the next with the thermometer

The Meteorologist makes sure the PI writes down the air temperature and water temperature, and notes the weather in the site description

Hydrologist (1)

The Hydrologist will travel from one quadrat to the next with the pH probe and refractometer

The Hydrologist makes sure the PI writes down the measurements they take, including units

Botanist/ Species Expert (4+)

Each Botanist will travel from one quadrat to the next with their species card(s)

The Botanist checks each quadrat for their species, and estimates “how many”

The Botanist makes sure the PI writes down the species name, and whether or not it was found

The Botanist makes sure the Photographer takes a photograph

Send PIs to their quadrats to begin writing site descriptions and photographing sites

Start the Geographer at the first quadrat

Start the Meteorologist at the second quadrat

Start the Hydrologist at the third quadrat

Start each botanist at a different quadrat

Move from left to right to avoid specialist pile-ups

If a Geographer, Meteorologist, H/C, or Botanist finishes early, assign them a species card
