Let`s make it BIG!
“Big“ is apretty elementary word. You may have learnt it in your first or second lesson. And we`ll probably never be fed up with it, won`t we?
“Big“ has won its place in anumber of idioms and phrases. By the way, do you know who “a big cheese“ is? Or you might know what it means when politicians “talk big.“
No idea? Never mind. J Learn it right now.
In Slovak language, everyone understands when we say that somebody is “veľké zviera“ or “veľká ryba.“ English language has also several phrases to name an important person:
A) abig cheese/ abig wheel: avery important person with alot of influence in an organization.
“a big cheese“ – in this sense “cheese“ comes from Urdu language[1] in which chiz means thingB) abig fish: avery important person but only in asmall community
C) abig name/ abig shot: an important person
“What does Ian`s dad do?”
“Oh, he`s a big shot in the City.”
And back to politicians. “Talking big “is their feature. It means that they like to tell people how good they are and promise many things.
If you are not a politician and yet want to get your place under the sun, you should “think big”→ have plans for the future, be ambitious.
If you think big and work hard, you can make it big → you can be successful.
There is also another expression with the same meaning: make it big = hit big
“The band has hit big in the US.”→ The band has been very successful in the US.
My favourite “big” expression is “dirty big.” We use it to emphasize (zdôrazniť) how large something is.
“When Iturned round, he was pointing adirty big gun at me.“
Anyway, another school year is over. That is always good news J
