LESSONS OF LOVE IN GENESIS

01-20-08

(Deu 4:2) Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. [Rev 22:19]

(Gen 3:1) Now the serpent[snake] was more subtle[cunning (usually in a bad sense): crafty] than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made[i.e. Satan added subtlety to what God had made]. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden[a garden (as fenced) /// to hedge about, i.e. (gen.) protect: defend]?

(Gen 3:2,3) And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it[i.e. the woman added “touch” to what God had said], lest ye die.

  1. (Gen 2:16,17) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

(Gen 3:4,5) And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

SIN: DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD

(Gen 3:6,7) And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew[understood] that they were naked [i.e. bare and exposed]; and they sewed[(works)] fig leaves together, and made themselvesaprons.

  1. wise = Heb: to be (caus. make or act) circumspect and hence intelligent:--consider, expert, instruct, prosper, (deal) prudent (-ly), (give) skill (-ful), have good success, teach, (have, make to) understand (-ing), wisdom, (be, consider, make) wise (-ly), guide wittingly.
  2. aprons = Heb: a belt (for the waist):--apron, armour, gird (-le) /// to gird on (as a belt, armor, etc.):--be able to put on, be afraid, appointed, gird, restrain, X on every side.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

(Gen 3:8-11) And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool[ruwach; wind] of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden[in effect, they tried to become a tree]. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

THE ORIGINS OF PSYCHOLOGY:

ESCAPING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS

(Gen 3:12,13) And the man said [figuratively pointing the accusatory finger of fault at her], The womanwhom thou gavest to be with me[strongly implying that God Himself was at fault], she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said [figuratively pointing the accusatory finger of fault at the serpent], The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

  1. Satan = Heb: an opponent: espec. Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary, Satan, withstand /// to attack, (fig.) accuse:--(be an) adversary, resist.
  2. Satan = Gk: the accuser, i.e. the devil:--Satan.
  3. beguiled = Heb: to lead astray, i.e. (mentally) to delude, or (morally) to seduce:--beguile, deceive, X greatly, X utterly.

THE CURSE (CONSEQUENCES) OF SIN UNTO THE SERPENT

(Gen 3:14,15) And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursedabove all cattle, and above every beast of the field [i.e. please note that man is excluded]; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity[hostility: hatred /// be an enemy]between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

THE CURSE (CONSEQUENCES) OF SIN UNTO THE WOMAN

(Gen 3:16) Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow['itstsabown; labor or pain] and thy conception [pregnancy]; in sorrow['etseb] thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

  1. sorrow = Heb: 'etseb; an earthen vessel; usually (painful) toil; also a pang (whether of body or mind):--grievous, idol, labor, sorrow /// to carve, i.e. fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to worry, pain or anger:--displease, grieve, hurt, make, be sorry, vex, worship, wrest.
  2. desire = Heb: in the orig. sense of stretching out after; a longing:--desire /// to run after or over, i.e. overflow:--overflow, water.
  3. rule = Heb: to rule:--(have, make to have) dominion, govern, X indeed, reign, (bear, cause to, have) rule (-ing, -r), have power.

THE CURSE (CONSEQUENCES) OF SIN UNTO ADAM

(Gen 3:17-19) And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened[listened and obeyed] unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground[symbolic of the woman] for thy sake; in sorrow[labor or pain] shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles[pain] shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face[labor] shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return [what was the serpent cursed to eat “all the days of thy life”?].

  1. (Gen 2:7) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

THE COVERING OF SINS BY GOD: INNOCENT BLOOD

(Gen 3:20,21) And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living [i.e. mother earth]. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins [plural; the skins of innocent animals, symbolizing coverings of innocence], and clothed them.

  1. coats = Heb:to cover: a shirt:--coat, garment, robe.
  2. skins = Heb: skin (as naked):--hide, leather, skin /// to (be) bare:-- be made naked..

EXTREME CONSEQUENCES

(Gen 3:22,23) And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil[except he had no discernment, as yet, between good and evil]: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever[in that perverted state]: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken[i.e. mother earth; symbolically, the woman].

  1. (Gen 2:15) And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it[serve, worship]and to keep it[guard, protect].

(Gen 3:24) So he drove out[expelled, thrust out] the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims[angels], and a flaming sword[the Holy Bible] which turned every way, to keep[guard, protect]the wayof the tree of life[i.e. Jesus Christ and eternal salvation].

  1. (Jer 23:29a) Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD;
  2. (Heb 4:12) For the word of God is quick[alive, lively, living], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  3. (Eph 6:17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
  4. (John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
