Student Prior Knowledge: Students will have an understanding of the patterns created by the formal elements of a poem-alliteration, imagery, tone, and metaphor. Students will have an understanding of the poem’s cultural context and the political rebellion and female sexuality that affected Andrew Marvell’s literary creation.

Standards:LA.1112.1.7.3 :The student will determine the main idea or essential message in grade-level or higher texts through inferring, paraphrasing, summarizing, and identifying relevant details and facts.

Goals:Student will read a portion of Andrew Marvell's poem "To His Coy Mistress" and demonstrate the central message of the poemthrough theanalysisof various literary devicessuch as metaphors, tone, and imagery.Exploring the formal elements of poetry is important to understand more deeply the poem’s meaning and the nuances that enrich the meaning for greater appreciation of real emotions and a historical representation of what previous generations found beautiful, important, or profound.

Learning Objectives:I can annotate a poem effectively by paraphrasing, identifying sections, noting literary devices and asking questions of the text.I can understand literary terminology and see why the author employs these techniques. I can model my own poem after a poet that is being studied. Task: Compose your own love poem.

Resources:

Procedure:

1. I/teacher review theliterary devices and social, political, and economic currents surrounding Andrew Marvell. (5 mins)

2. You/students will listen to an audio recording of the poem and annotate the poem with all the possible literary devices you find while you listen.(10 mins)

3. We/class will go line by line translating the poem into modern terms. We/class will discover the author’s purpose in writing the poem. (15mins)

4. I/teacher will explain the assignment and give students options on what medium to present the poem either through a PowerPoint Slideshow, audio recording, or a YouTube video. (10 mins)

5. I/teacher will show examples of past student’s love poems modeled after Andrew Marvell’s and give guidelines on what is expected.(10 mins)

6. You/students will use the remainder of the class period to brainstorm ideas on how you will present the poem but will use outside classroom time to write and prepare the presentation of their poem. (10 mins)

Assessment:

Students will be graded on how well they captured the central message of the poem and how well it conveyed the same conviction and feelings Andrew Marvell had in his poem "To His Coy Mistress." But at the same time, poems demonstrate a “modern twist” in comparison to Andrew’s 17th century language. The student’s poem must include a student’s choice of at least 2-3 literary devices. Poems will also be graded on creativity, mode of presentation, and depth of meaning in their choice of language.
